New PCM VS my car

Ok I want to get a HPtune for my car. I was planning on getting a new seperate PCM for the HPtune, and keep my old one for back up purposes.

Does anyone know if with the hptune, the new PCM will hook right up and work? Or do I need to get some kind of passlock or stuff like that for my key or stuff like that so the car works properly.

And can I at anytime, just swap PCM in 5 minutes and everything will work fine like a stock GM S2??

Your PCM is encoded with your car's VIN number. You would want to get the PCM, have it installed and flashed by GM to your stock car, and then you would be able to swap them back and forth.

How much would it cost to get my new PCM flashed by GM?? That wouldnt by any chance get warrantied would it?? I could see them red flagging my car some fast if I just show up with a new pcm in my car that doesnt work.

I think you should be able to do this HPTuners. Go into the tuning forums and ask, you might get a better response.

if it's the same year PCM as your car you should only have to change the VIN number upon re hookup of the unit in HPT. Shouldn't have to hassle with GM. The VIN is easily changeable in HPT. That is the only barrier. Make sure the stock tunes match each other on both PCM's in terms of values.

So if its an 06 PCM, I should just be able to change the vin VIA HPtunes and it will work fine?..... What do you mean by stock tunes match eachother in terms of values?? Do you mean make a exact replica of my old one, then play around with it??

Here is a screen shot. After hooking up new PCM do read entire and then after you have a copy of the original tune on the PCM change the VIN.

That is correct. You want to have the original tune from the old PCM on the new one assuming you have no changes on it. The Values in terms of what was changed in the tune. VE tables, Spark, Ignition, Timing.

See screen shot from prior post.

I will warn you though, if you don't have the 06 year unlocked in HPT it will ask for extra credits to be consumed because it's going to think it's a different car with a different VIN. If the year is unlocked rather then by car then you have no problems

Worse comes to worse you may need to do a security re-learn with the car. No biggie.

Solid, so to sum it up quickly, I hook up my old PCM, save the values. Hook up the new PCM, put the old PCM's values in, change the vin, then go and play around and try to make new found HP?>?

How this should work in order:

1. Save tune off old PCM (set aside in computer)
2. Shut car off, swap PCM's (unhook battery for this)
3. Once new PCM hooked up. Make sure you have the year unlocked or ample credits for new PCM. Register.
4. Read Entire on new PCM and save as back up (set aside in computer somewhere).
5. Reflash old PCM on new one (assuming O/S are the same).
6. Make sure the VIN gets changed in the event it kept it for some odd reason.
7. Enjoy!

Having an extra PCM to mail in to be flash tuned is always a good idea. Saves money and time but you still have to be careful. Make sure you label the PCM with a label maker, obviously they all look the same and sometimes it can be confusing which one you just pulled.

Do you know if I can just send the new PCM and VIN # to a company to get it tuned W/out sending my old stock GM S2 with it? Then they would send it back, and I could plugg and play with it?

Not without having an exact copy of your current PCM right now. They want to see what you have on it right now to kinda simulate and replicate your present setup. (Speaking how a vendor would). They are most likely just going to nuke what data is on the PCM and reflash with there own custom setup. But i'd do what I said in the first sentence.

If it was me sending it in,

Copy your present PCM to the new one and send it out. They want to see your current setup before incorpin changes in the new PCM.

But wouldnt all GM S2 pcm be the same?? So couldnt they just take a normal S2 tune? Or am I way out of left field with this one?

Car learns as you drive. It changes things in the tune while you drive everytime, adjusing trims etc.. That's what makes each car a bit different. That's why it's best to get an exact copy.

Oh really?? jesus thats interesting... But my car right now doesnt have the accessories that I will be putting on this summer, so wouldnt that make my PCM not representative of how it should be tuned?

You would waste your time and money getting a second computer if you are talking about buying HPtuners.

If you are talking about having someone else tune your computer with their HPtuners, and then swapping back and forth, then the only thing to worry about is resetting the Vehicle Anti Theft system (takes 30 minutes if you do it right the first time), and then getting the Crank Shaft Position Relearned (Take it to a dealer to have that function performed with a Tech2 scanner)

If your going to a smaller pulley and larger injectors they can use a baseline tune for something they already made for another customer and match parameters in your PCM.
