Hey guys, I'm currently a GTP owner and hopefully soon an SS/SC owner, been reading for a while and I think I'm going to have a good transition from the m90/3800 to the m62/2.0L. I did have a few questions that I didn't find in the FAQ's.

GTP's have weak transmissions, how is the 5spd in the ss/sc?

I want a car that is mildly modded, what is the best pulley size that absolutely will not hurt reliability but adds performance? Was thinking the answer is probably 3.0"

What does BPU intell for the SS/SC?

How easy is it to make ss/sc's a mid 13 second car and how reliable will it be?

How big of an issue is KR with these cars? I know they are intercooled which helps....

Thanks for your answers and I apologize for I'm sure this has all been covered, but I was not able to find them in the faq's, sorry If I missed a newbie section.

Jim

the 5spd in the ss/sc doesnt seem to be a problem so far... 275whp has been achieved and it brakes the axleshafts but the trans seems to hold up fine.

Lots of guys run a 2.7-2.8" pulley

dunno

stage 2gmpp + catback + intake = mid 13 sec car...

dunno...

lol, im a newbie too, but not that new. Ive had mine for a lil while..

the clutch is a problem for most

... u can either go with intense kits (mid 13's) or GM stage 2 kits with a 2.8 pulley to work ur way to mid-high 13's

I just sold my GTP a couple weeks ago and bought a black SS SC. I apsolutly love it. It is a much more enjoyable car to drive.
It seems that there have been some real problems with the Cobalts 5speed, but I dont think any tranny is as bad as the GTP's 4T65. When I sold my 99 GTP it had its 4th trans in it.

Thanks Guys

Yeah, I've modded my GTP, 3.4" pulley, Intense PCM, K&N Intake, Random Technology downpipe/no cat, dynomax cat-back, eibach front springs, kyb struts, blah etc, blah whatever. There's more stuff but honestly I've kinda gotten played out on my GP. I love the car but it's just time to lay her down. Here are a few pics.

At this point it's either going to be an 05-06 Cobalt SS/SC or 04 LS1 GTO. The cobalt is looking like a more practical ride, being that I'm about to start my 4th yr of college.

My primary concern, is....I DO NOT WANT TO BE a ricer, the wing concerns me on SS/SC's, how many folks do wing deletes? Will people think that's a shitty idea? I think it would look clean and nice.

Anyhow, if I do go ss/sc I think it will be a very easy transition. The more I think about it the more I want to do go that route. Seems like a very nice community.

GTP pics:

Oh, never went to the track fully modded, but before downpipe PB was 14.0@97.66

The thing that keeps the cobalt from being a ricer car is that it has the ***** to back up its looks. Anyway, the wing is stock so its not like you put it on there your self afterward. Heck Evo's and Sti's both have wing's and are def. not to be underestimated.

I traded in my BLack GTP for my Yellow Cobalt SS/SC. It's a much more fun drive than the GTP. My GTP was more consistent at the track since it was an automatic. But the Cobalt takes skill to drive.

ONLY BUY AN SS WITH THE LIMITED SLIP! You should know how bad you need limited slip after owning a GTP. It is worth the $1,500 now, plus the seats will actually hold you in your place unlike the stock ss seats, or the horrid GTP seats that felt like a leather couch.

KR is no issue on these cars with the Intense Stage Kits. I have seen some issues on the GMPP stage 2. The stock intercooler is more than enough for the mods we all will do to it. GTP's needed an intercooler BAD!

Right off the bat, get the Ingalls torque dampener. That should be your first mod! These cars need an upper engine mount. Otherwise you end up like me, and blow out your axles at 2,000 miles. The clutch is not really the issue as much as people think, it is the axles. During expremely hard acceleration the axles pop out of the tranny, and blow the CV joints/boots. That was a common problem on drag raced GTP's also. Usually referred to as a weak tranny. Don't bother with the HD axles on these cars, just stick with the stockers and replace those as neccissary.

Go Stage 3, unless you can stomach the core charges for stage 5. Stage 3 should give you a mean 300 crank hp. And either do the expensive Corsa cat-back, or just have the exhaust done custom for cheaper and make it all 2.5" magnaflow with no resonator. If you go 3.0" you will only gain top end power, but lose all kinds of low end torque.
