This is one of the the little mod's out of a few to come that I did to my car, to get my car back to my standards of track ready again.

Cars oil system now contains 8.5qts of oil, and the temps have dropt alot on my build motor set-up.

This system cost me roughly $280-290 to put together.

You already told me about this so I was kind of expecting a thread on it.

But, the LSJ already has an oil cooler. Although it does use the engine coolant to cool the oil. But, is it really necessary to go all out and install something like this? Are you doing more than drag racing? Are you doing road racing that is causing you to run much hotter temps than usual?

What kind of temperature drops have you seen?

 

An oil temp cooler strapped to the condenser that gets as hot as the radiator, lowers temps on a car that already has an oil cooler on it?

maybe if this thing didn't already have a system built onto it, it would be useful... or if ralliartist said, if you were running hard on a road course or something... dunno, but i just don't see that lowering temps down, and i would be really curious how it effects your oil pressure.

 

IMO it would be better if it was mounted remotely, like on a frame rail or on the crash bumper. If anything, the extra oil in the system will keep temps down.

 

I plan on road racing it, there is a 1/2 inch spaced between it and the radiator. And my temps with my motor build were 190-195, I'm not sure if it has to do with my higher compression, but since is done my temp is 180-183, and drop rapidly into the 170-178 when on in the pedal, the reason I located where I did was one, it's in the open part of the top grill for cooling, and two to see it threw the grill.

Temps drop for these reasons that I see I'm running now 8.5 from the stock fill of 6.5qrts. Two I'm using air to cool it not the 180* plus coolant bolted right on the hot motor. It has helped a lot more than I thought it was going to.

Its' spaced a 1/2inch away from the radiator, I have no ac condenser, ac is completely deleted.

Thanks john! you gave me the ideal. I just made it happen I'm not the first to do this, cavy's doing LSJ Swaps are ditching the stock oil cooler, so are most ariel atoms from what I hear. cause they claim they suck.

sweet, I wasn't awear of me being the first to do it the way I did it, thats cool. heck my spend the money to buy this plate below that the cavy's and atoms are, when i can tape my stocker and bingo "FREEBIE" like jessie james monstor garage...lol



by the way pushing the fittings onto the braided line was a pita. lol

by doing it that way you keep the oil relief pressure spring in the system the other adapter dosent have it

 

if the oil is stayin at optimal range why cool it down some more? even though your running a car hard if it can keep up with the cooling demands.

no **** wow you are observant i followed the build and it was done different by derik

convetional oil starts to break down at 180 synthetic starts at 190 and the only thing the stock cooler is good for is warming up the oil

 

I plan on doing road racing in the future, and plus it was something to try. and ever since my motor build with my higher compression I've ran at 190-195ish and now I'm back to optimal temp levels. of 180* and lower if I get on it. I'm just trying to protect my investment in my motor a little more lol

I wish I had the time to follow other peoples build like I use to. These days I just don't have the time with everything going on with my car and other stuff in my life, I'm suprised I find the time for my car or this site.

 

a small oil cooler like that dropped your coolant temps down 15 degrees

 

To be honest yes it did, it's bigger than stock, main reason why it helped was for the extra oil the car takes to fill the system 8.5qrts now. this has way better cooling than the factory unit that I'm seeing. The small one is only temp I'm getting an 11"x 11"x 2" when there not on back order from the local race shop near me.

 

if it changed it that much, that would be a big no go for me cause dropping down below 180 will close the tstat which means little to no flow of coolant to the turbo.

i just can't believe it made that much of a difference

 

self it will make that big of a difference you should run that setup your oil temp is going to be higher because of the turbo and you will get plenty of coolant flow to the turbo mine has run 180 seince the day i bought the car new

 

now you are just being ignorant. If the stock cooler was only good for warming up the coolant, then I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be there, and it wouldn't be called a cooler.

I'm still on stock compression for the time being anyway. My coolant temps ran normal.

 

no im not being ignorant it has more then 1 use it is not just a cooler its main purpose is to get the oil at runing temp faster and to try and keep it at a constant temp to help reduce oil burn off by doing those 2 things you help reduce the emiissions out put of the engine

 

where is your turbo coolant tapped into?

 

i dont have a turbo on mine but i am speaking from experience
