Overheating problem!

2006 Cobalt SS 2.0 Im having a severe overheating problem, my car is shutting off while im driving at approx 160 to 180 degrees! I just replaced the PCM and the MAF sensor... anybody have any idea what could be causing this? I have noticed that the antifreeze has ran into the overflow container

My car runs regularly between 178-200 while on the freeway. Ive gotten up to 220 sometimes in city traffic but it always cools quick.

Just letting you know the engine coolant and after cooler systems are totally separate.

If its not "Cold" then why is everyones Eco running hotter than 180, cause its "Cold" in terms of where it should be.

If you want 160 Change the T-Stat

220 is not abnormal on scorching day. fan will keep up with that. Cruising should be 185-190.

No need to go to a lower T-stat on these cars. They aren't designed for it and will hate it.

They like to be fully warm.

actually 220 is an abnormal temp on an lsj if it is running that high while cruising there is a problem

saying the engine isent designed for a 160 is incorrect the engine is tuned around a 180 all that you need to do to run a 160 is very minimal tuning change

220 is normal at idle....low speed fans won't even turn on until 223. While moving, it should be cooler than that though.

Is your thermostat stuck? That would be why it is it is cooler temps and it is going back into the over flow.

Well if your shuting the car off at 145 your not even letting it warm up all they way. So I'm going to guess that's a typo and say your shutting it off at 245. If so then you might have a cracked head , warped head, or blown head gasket, since it sounds like you replaced every thing els

yeah typo sorry... well that is another thing i had checked and it passed the pressure check and some other test. i mean i hve tried almost everything. if i stay at a constant speed it will cool down to like 210. it overheats when i accelerate runs fine in idle. i mean i have never had a problem like that.

you should check and make sure your water pump is turning....seen a few ecotecs at work that have the water pump/balance shaft chain fail.......if you look on the side of the motor with the belt, you will see a little plate held on by 4 bolts......take the place off and start the engine, see if the water pump is turning.

But if it did overheat.......there is a chance you could of warped the head/blown the head gasket.....and it might not show up under a pressure test. The best way to tell is to get a block tester and see what happens. The block tester uses a blue liquid, and almost a turkey baster looking tube. Napa or any place should have one.

well i went to a autoshop and they used the block tester and it passed. i mean could it be my coolant? bc i mean obviously the coolant isnt circulating very good or at all. i mean have a coolant flush done?

ok, well if it passed the block test.......go and check the water pump like I stated above. If the pump isn't turning, coolant isn't moving.

If you replaced the radiator, maybe there is a very large air lock in your cooling system that is not allowing it to flow right. I know after my engine build when I filled the coolant back up, I only got like 4 quarts in instead of the recommended like 6.8 or something like that. Just had a lot of air in the system that needed bled. I found an easy way to do that was to put a vacuum bleeder on the nipple on the head that leads to the over flow tank. Bled it out, filled it up the rest of the way with coolant and that fixed my issue. Maybe worth a shot for you.
