Puzzled...

Is it possible for the headgasket to leak oil but not coolant? Could it be coming from the intake manifold? Only way I could see it coming from the intake mani is if there is oil in it right?

Oil is clean, Coolant is clean.

Timing cover isn't leaking, replaced front crankshaft seal. Idk where this oil is coming from. It looks like its leaking from right under the upper motor mount. None of the accessories (alternator ect..) are covered in oil. I cleaned all of the oil up, and still leaked some, even with the oil drained. It looks like its coming from the intake manifold area all the way left towards the motor mount. Idk, i'm stumped.

Here are a few photos.

Bottom of motor mount

Looking down the top of the motor mount and head.

sorry if the photos are all "twisty".

Idk, should I try torquing down the head some more? I havent touched the studs since I rebuilt the motor. I'm at the point where if I dont get it right this time, i'm just gonna give up and let it leak like the oil rig in the gulf.

should the fluid smell like a dirty oil though?

Oil is thinner than coolant and this has been debated before but I do believe you could possibly leak oil but not coolant, although it is unlikely

I'll have to do some more searching around. I'm going to torque down the head studs a little more and see if that helps.

if you decide to do that break them loose first and dont exceed 85lb/tq

the main oil feed to the head is the back by #4 for it to leak oil there it would think it would have to be a block deformaty or some dirt got between the block and gasket or head and gasket or in btween the lms portion of the gasket what did you torque the outside 4 bolts to

Oil floats on top of water because it is less dense. Coolant is a mixture with water so how do you figure that?

oil has a different boiency( or however you spell it) then water the only place the hg could leak oil is around the oil drain back areas other then that it will leak coolant before oil

I have a built motor.

-Diamond pistons
-Cosmetic Head Gasket
-Golden Eagle Headstuds --http://thmotorsports.com/golden_eagle_manufacturing/golden_eagle_headstuds_and_mainstuds/gemecotechsk/i-167670.aspx (better than ARP because they have a glass bead finish )
ect...

I'll probably loosen the studs and re-torque them next monday. Too busy with work this weekend to have time. Thing is, the oil leak is no where near #4 piston (I know where your talking about) it looks like its coming from around the where the camshaft meets the timing chain, or to the far left side of under the intake manifold. IDK, its a decent amount of oil. but whats wierd is i'm never low come oil change time lol...

you can always use oil dye and a black light to locate where its coming from

Not sure if anyone has thought of the possibility but could it be your head is cracked? I had an issue similar to this except it was coming from around the timing chain tensioner. Determined it to be a hairline crack in the casting and I had to get a new head.

No, I should do a leak down. The thing is, I always have a pretty normal amour of oil when I do oil changes. Like I'm maybe a 1/4 of a quart low, if that.
