Spark plug question

Alright I got stage 2 exactly a week ago and like everybody else I have noticed the car isn't running as smooth with the stock plugs so I ordered some BKR7E's. I get to parts source to pick them up and what I get is BKR5EG's he did mention that he might have to get the platinum tip equivalent of the BKR7E's but didn't mention this when I called to confirm the plugs were in before driving to pick them up. I ended up not taking the plugs, because the guy there couldn't confirm that they were equivalent, I would think that the platinum tip equivalent would be BKR7** I asked them to re order the BKR7E's tomorrow (they can get them same day from their warehouse) Does anybody know what the difference between these two plugs is, and how exactly to break down NGK's part numbers into terms that make sense?

On NGK's website they did not have a BKR5E"G", but they did have a BKR5E and it appears to be the same as the BKR7E, except that there are different applications listed for that plug. Check out their website.

Edit: Okay so I found their nomenclature. The difference between the BKR5 and the BKR7 is the heat range. That guy had step hotter plugs for you: that would have been horrible. Thank god you didn't take them and use them. The scale is from 2 to 12; the higher the number the colder the plug.

thanks I'll check it out myself today when they call back. I just thought somebody may have had a similar experience. and may even be using these plugs if they are as close as parts source says they are

They are the same plug design but they are a step warmer. This is the opposite of what you want and it would cause detonation.

are you saying that the plugs are a step warmer than the BKR7E's or are a step warmer than stock. I just got off the phone with them and they say that going platinum actually makes the plug a step colder, so to get the equivalent of a BKR7E in platinum you have to go a step warmer. Plus in my orignal pose I messed up the part number, what they got in is actually BKR5EGP, aparently nobody stocks the BKR7E anymore. Although that is probably just this store

I don't think they know what they are talking about as far as the steps warmer or colder. All that represents is how far the insulator protrudes into the combustion chamber deciding how much heat it transfers out of the cylinder.

The BKR5EGP is 1 step WARMER than STOCK. You need a plug which is one step COLDER than stock. You don't have to take my word for it; just search the forums and read NGK's website and nomenclature and it is absolutely apparent:

Website "spark plug 411": http://www.ngk.com/sparkplug411.asp?kw=Platinum&mfid=1

The nomenclature is at the very bottom of the page.

The tannish ceramic is a good sign.
