For those over boosting
For those over boosting
Hey mods if you think this belongs in problems move as you see fit.
Hey guys just thought I would warn people to keep an eye on ther cat if there on the stock pulley but there seeing more than 12.5 psi. And I mean like a good amount more like anywhere from 14 tp 15 psi. I was happy as hell why it was happeining to me back on my stock pully but than one of the grand prix members on this site Drufu$ I believe told me to check my cat cause most super charged cars when there boostin more than normal might mean the cat is cloged. Sure enough I go out side the next day to do my brakes and my friend who was nosing around was like "Holy **** dude your cat looks like a swollen cherry!"
I get undernite the car to look at my cat and you can see at the top of it was normal rust looking brown color Than a brite blue line with a little silver in it than Bright red for the rest of the cat. The down pipe looked like it was streching or stressed but what ever it was it didn't look good. So I took it to the dealer and they said they had to order from the down pipe back cause the exhaust system is all one piece and it would take about a week to get it in. Than I thought to myself well the car "feels' the same and of course when me and my crew where driving to a car meet out on longisland a white G35 came wanting to play so I though hey i've nosed theses guys out before this one should be no problem. And sure enough 2nd and 3rd im pulling fine and than I hit 4th and the car completly falls on its face. It was like I pulled a parachute or sumthing. Come to find out my cat internals let lose and all flew into my mufller and clogged that up too.
So moral of this thread is if your over boosting just do yourself a favor and keep an eye on your exhaust system make sure everything is cool and staying that way. Cause you'll think your the **** seeing your guage hit 14 psi on stock pully when in truth it doesn't even mean your actually faster just backed up.

the dealer wanted 900 to install a new downpipe. they said it was my fault for using leaded fuel. what a bunch of iddiots. so if I install the new downpipe, with this happen again. since I am almost always boosting 13-15

yo darksun im goin out today to look at my cat. what should i look for cuz i have been boosting about 13-14 psi steady. i thought it was b/c of the cold weather because every1 says its boost spike because of the cold air. jus let me know what to look for because i dont wanna mess sh*t up.
Crap... ive been overboosting now for about three months, and the other day just during normal driving...(well alittle spirited) i smelt this horrible smell, it wasnt clutch or tire, it was something i had never really smelt before i bet it was my exhaust!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cant wait to check holy s***
well for me every once in a while it would smell like sulfur inside the car. but my friends who would drive behind me when we go out would tell me "hey man your exhaust smells like ass. That was signs of the exhaust going I guess?Um the only other thing i noticed it that compared to the other cobalt owners i met my exhaust poped a lot I mean like alot. I really liked it too but since they replaced my exhaust it doesn't pop as much or as load any more. I still miss thatsound. When you check on your car just look from underneath up at the cat check the whole thing out it chould be a browns is rust color. With my the first two inches after the inlet pipe was brown than a bright blue line with sliver. Almost like it got so hot in that one spost the rust color couldn't say on, than the rest of the cat was this very reddigh color almosr like a cherry red. On mine you could see where it was backing up. Weird smells coming into the car is one of the first sighns. For me it was so bad I always had to have the car recirulate the air inside the cabin because when I used the vent one that sulfur like smell would get inside the car.
yo darksun i really owe you my car is going into the dealer on monday. it had that bed smell like 2 weeks ago and i thought it was my clutch as you would have seen in a previous thread i started. glad to hear it wasnt my clutch but mad that it was my cat and i prob have to wait for them to repair it. hopefully i get a nice loaner to BEAT ON.

some people i know are only pulling 11.5-12 psi cause their cat just fell off
**** only 4k miles? I just hit 4,500 miles. I smelt that smell before, didnt know what it was. Kinda smelled like something burning, almost like wiring (weird). That may be my problem, along with my clutch going to hell. Will have to check it out after winter, get the car up on the lift and take a look.
I ment to make a post about it when it first happend to me but There wasn't many post about people over boosting. I guess as more cobalts where putting more miles on there car more and more threads with people saying they where hitting anywhere from 14-15 psi on stock pully thats when I knew this might be happening to other people.Funny thing is when i took my car to the dealer I told them the exhust was making a rattling noise but of course When i took it to the dealer no noise. Just my luck when i had one of the techs in my car to try and recrate the noise bam finally a check engine light came on car couldn't take it anymore. Found out the noise i heard or rattling was actual pieces of the cat moving down the exhaust system and getting stuck in my muffler. The tech kept banging on my exhuust with a rubber mallet near the cat and you could hear all the crap falling out of it.

Also is the same smell that a cat is breaking in...Use to do E-tests here in Canada, and when we installed new cats they would smell for awhile until they were broken in... Also if your cat is plugged you should notice a significant decrease in power, and maybe even a CEL....Nice heads up though im gonna check mine too...
