Timing?

Just a quick newb question, please don't flame me. I am not new to cars by any means, just my SS. Is there any way to change the timing without messing with the ECU? Or is it all done with HPT? I know there is no distributer that I can turn and use a timing light, so how is it done on our cars? I just installed my water injection and want to tune everything now to make the most of it, but not sure how to go about it. Is this where HPT comes into play? If so, that kinda sucks that HPT is the only way to read our cars, not very convienent. Also, what is a good amount of timing to run? I know its based on my mods, etc. But what is a good jumping off point? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

yes, to my knowedge, the only way to change TIMING would be with HPT. The fuel tables can be changed w/o HPT using a convertor, but then again, timing is as equally important to be tuning as your AFRs.
