timing chain tension problem

i had my motor apart last winter and while putting it together i had problems with my timing chain tensioner and ended up breaking it. i went to the stealership for a new one and they said ppl have been having problems w/ them also, so GM came out w/ a newly designed one. the new one has no immediate spring tension in it and appears to use oil pressure to keep tension only while the motor is running. anyways, i tore my valve and side plate off the engine block to see if my chain marks were still lined up w/ the cam and crank gear marks, and I saw that the chain jumped 4 teeth backwards on all 3 gears!. everything is still timed correcty. anybody have this issue? i believe i need to acquire the original tensioner to get rid of this problem.

My cars timing was one tooth off every gear from the factory when I took it apart. Also when I was trying to see if mine was timed correctly I said I could not get the teeth to come align with the colored links. Someone told me that it could take a lot of rotations to get it to line up again. Have you tried to keep spinning it to see if it gets closer? Just throwing out ideas.

Those marks don't line up with the paint on the chain everytime the motor turns over.. did you roll it over to see if they ever lined up correctly?

You want the new tensioner style, theres nothing wrong with it.. and it won't go out over and over again

That is interesting about the new style tensioner. I just did mine and put the old one in. Should I go to Chevy and get the new style?

Sorry OP, dont mean to thread jack.

You need to tap the hex head of the new tensioner with a rubber mallet to get it to spring out

the new one i got freely slid in and out. there was no literal spring inside of it. it had 2 orifices in it, instead of just the 1 like on the original. this tells me its strictly oil pressure operated.

i would look into what problem ppl were having w/ the original tensioner before making a decision.
