No, the SS/SC is drag limited, there is no electronic limit on top speed. It's supposedly drag limited at around 144-ish. Aside from that, the only thing holding it back would be the gearing. As far as changing a drag limited car, you'd have to tinker with aerodynamics to reduce drag on the car.

Just beacause the speedo says a certain number doesn't mean the car will reach it. Anyone remember the old Neon's with 240 km/h speedos?

I've got a base Cobalt and it cuts out at about 105mph... I've read a few things about the GM dealer being able to reprogram the tire size and speed rating in the ECU, but is there anything aftermarket that can be bought to raise the max speed limiter?

I've had mine up to just above 150mph, and she wouldn't climb any more, damn aerodynamics .......... when the lines in the center of the road become one sold line, then you know you are going to fast

The speed limiter is in fact based on the speed rating of your tires from factory. Even if you change your tires the dealer will not generally be able to reprogram this to be any faster. (the software is all "hooked" nto your VIN) There ARE aftermarket tools that can reprogram this for certan vehicles with certain ECM/PCMs (basically the V8s and some V6s) I highly doubt we will see such as tool that will work with the latest generation of GM ECM/PCMs anytime soon. Someday maybe...

I don't remember what mag it was that started this whole "drag limited" thing, but it's a load of sh*t!. What the hell it that suppose to mean anyways with a better body it would go faster?,
well DUH!. So maybe if we take the body off it will go really fast. The car IS NOT drag limited that is just how fast that much horsepower will go in that car. If it was drag limited then it would not matter how much HP you had, it would not go any faster. Then how come they have a saltflats cobalt that pushes 240MPH with very little change to the body. Sure it's lowered, the mirrors taken off, different wing and front air dam, but the over all frontal area and roof line remain the same as a stock car. I would say that blows this bullsh*t "drag limited" tagline out of the water, i mean what car is not "drag limited", THATS JUST AS FAST AS IT WILL GO. Think about things before you just puke them out and repeat them as fact, remember you should talk half and much as you listen.

Bravo
What's worse is that most of the rags dont even drive the car to top speed during their review testing. Basically if you cant reach the engine redline in top-gear it often get's referred to as "drag limited" but there are OTHER limiting factors (such as the engine-lol)
Since the SS/SCs tires are good to 168 mph+ AND since there is no speed limiter programmed into the LSJ PCM- it will only go so fast limited by gearing, HP and yes, various drag factors.

But no fair comparing the Bonneville car as removing all that drag and boosting the engine to over 750HP will obviously make the car able to reach a much higher top speed ...given enough salt!

Uhhhh..no offence or nothing... but the 2 posters above me are idiots. First off, could you maybe figure out what drag limited means before you bash people for using the term correctly. Drag limited mean EXACTLY that the car will not go any faster due to wind resistance. There are 2 ways of fixing this.... make the car more wind resistant, or add more power to overcome the wind resistance to reach a new max speed. Talk half as much as you listen asshat.

Oh, and WOP, its called the VSS mod... look it up on j-body.... car doesn't know how fast its going, so it keeps going faster...

Oh, and on subject, mine hit 149 and just wouldn't go anymore.... of course I covered deltona to sanford in the space of that run... but it was 4 in the morning on the interstate.

Well sure, you can just unplug your VSS and the PCM wont even KNOW how fast you are going...
and neither WILL YOU!!
(FYI-your speedo get's it's data from the PCM via the Class 2 bus)

PS> there is NOTHING of value on J-body.org
Who's the IDIOT here??!!

I've definately taken my car past 140mph multiple times. In fact I've hit a little over 145mph and still nothing. I don't dare go further cause I hate when governs kick in. It always makes me shudder.

But there is no governer to kick in, the car just does not accelerate anymore because it can't overcome aerodynamics, you just stay at the same speed, it doesn't cut fuel or anything like a governor would.

i max out in 4th about 130-135, from the transmission calculator with our gears and tire sizes 5th gear hits 6500rpm at about 180mph (no way in hell it'll do it, but that's the gearing max) so if you're hitting the fuel cut anywhere below 175mph in 5th gear, your car has some issues
