What is CEL?

I keep reading CEL on here, and I do not know what it is. Can someone explain this to me?

The MAF sensor (mass air flow) is picking up more air flow then stock...When the computer sees something that isnt in "spec" it freaks out and turns on the light...With the GM stage reflash however it can be fixed....That the best way i could explain it smart ppl feel free to jump in anytime.......

Actually the MAF is reading less air than it should be and it'a causing a lean code for most of us. P0171

Wouldn't a lean code imply more air?

I thought the same. I know its not the same but when I adjust the air screw on the carb for my dirtbike and open it up and then let it run and check the sprak plug. The plug is grey/white color and if i close or turn in the air screw it richens the mix and the spark plug turns to brown

the MAF reads less air coming in , then what is actually gettin into the engine so the pcm cuts the fuel back too to keep the ratio the same, except the engine still needs that fuel because in fact there is still the same amount of air coming in. this results in the exhaust stream coming out as lean and the O2 sensors picking it up as lean, causing P0171

What is the dangers if you have a P0171 pop up every other few days and clearing them with the interceptor? Will this hurt the car eventually???
