I was doing some reading on exhuasts and I might just be nuts, but it seems that gm doesnt make a performance downpipe. Why is that?. I mean they make the exhaust manifold and the catback, is the stock piece really efficient or something?

the reason is for emmisions, GM has to comply with every states laws, strictest being Cali. The catalyst must perform at a high effeciency for the car to be sold in California. You open up the downpipe and put a non-restrictive cat and you then start poluting at a much higher level. As effecient and environmentally friendly the Ecotec motor is, our GOV would look down upon GM if they decided to make available parts that create more smog.

Something to consider is that for GM to offer a down pipe it has to meet certain criteria. It must meet emissions requirements be cost effective to produce etc. Considering the short time this platform has been in production I'm amazed at what they DO offer for our cars. It would be reasonable to expect GM to offer a OFF HIGHWAY USE ONLY part in the not too distant future.

also, in MANY states, it is illegal to replace a cat in a car if the OEM one is functional. damned if i know why.

it's exactly for emissions.

Yep... Stage 1 & 2... and the GMPP manifold and exhaust are CARB (california air resources board) legal. They'll pass emissions in all 50 states. However in Cali and probably some others it is illegal to replace the cat in a car with anything other than the OEM replacement part. They do a visual inspection to confirm that the cat is there and is factory. Thus... no GMPP downpipe.

Too bad though.

Exactly, and to top it off,the Stage III tune disables some other systems such as the air conditioning, and other creature comforts.

not that i know of, however... it would cost you less than $20 at an exhaust shop for it.

That is correct, and I am aware of that. However the question that was asked was why does GM not offer a HP down pipe and to my knowledge they do not.

Yes that is correct.Stage III is about HP and not comfort. It also voids your warranty,if I am not mistaken.Correct me if I'm wrong.

i would imagine it would void the warranty in that it has a nitrous program and a 100 octane mode, also its labled as "off road use only"

i have been told both ways... i'm guessing that it's a gray area... so if you toast the car, it's on you... but if the radio acts up, they'll fix it.
