06 LS Coupe, Broken Timing Chain

i bought this car off a guy at work. 78K miles, 5 speed Strip model. told me he went to start it and it wouldn't start. Garage said it was a broken timing chain. i think he was driving it when it let go. i've never seen the heads of valves stuck in the top of a piston before. there is a hole in Piston #2 and that same cyl is cracked

Car:

Block:

anyways i picked it up for a good price. hoping to find another motor for cheap to throw in it. anybody have any tips or stuff i should look at on this car? the next motor will get a new timing chain, and so will my 152K mile LE5 after im done with this car.

i got it for $500, there is a Sedan on CL for $500 with "undercarriage damage" i have to give him a call. car is worth 330-350 in scrap metal anyways so essentially 150-200 for a motor.

and from what im seeing on google and what not, its a common problem on the L61's

Wtf?! Dude must have had that racked out to like 9 grand! Is a broken chain really a common issue? I don't think I've ever noticed people saying they went, I'm almost at 100k replaced my tensioner maybe 20k ago but haven't seen any other issues.

i know i hadnt seen much on here, but i have an LE5 so i dont seem to pay much attention all the time to teh other model engine issues as i dont have one or know a whole lot about them.

i know doing a google search there were alot of Yahoo answers, Questions about broken timing chains. like i said im not mad i knew what i could be getting into. hoping to pick up another motor or something soon and get it running again.

Still hopeful that it's not a common problem. Had to change my head once and that wasn't the most fun thing I've ever done lol. It is worrying though how everything runs alongside the timing chain. The water and oil pumps run off separate chains but if either of them was to ever seize up, the shock would most likely break the chain and then bye bye engine.

Find a lower mileage motor and just slap it in and make it run.. then get rid of the car. I wouldn't spend the money on fixing everything up to be honest. The car will most likely sell to a 15-16 year old girl that will have the bags deployed before the motor fails.

Not wishing that upon any teenage girl, but it's a common situation in my area at least.

^ i use that site religiously! great source for parts.

that happens around here too, but i dont want to start it and have an issue with the timing chain. a new chain is $35 a Tensioner is $25. i'll do it just to be safe its only $55

with my luck it would break when i have the cash in hand for the car and shes pulling out of the driveway!

Yeah I understand man. I just meant to get it running but don't worry about bells and whistles. You've got a good deal there.

i like how you think! plan was to put it up for 4500 OBO and see what Craigslist brings out of the woodwork! if i pick up that other motor and spend some time cleaning the car up i could get it done for around $1000.

i've already stole the Pass side rear C pillar trim (Clip broke on mine) and the shift boot ring this morning. im going to replace them with my ehh parts and ship it. should work out ok. GF not happy but she will be when its sold.

so its been almost 6 months. car has just been sitting in the garage. i started pulling the motor the other night. i may already ahve this thing spoken for.

Long story short. my dad was let go from his job, has a 2011 Cruze with 32K miles. we made a deal for me to get this running, new clutch, pads and rotors and fix the pass side exterior door handle.

9k and this car for his Cruze. Its not set in stone, he may sell it first. but otherwise looks like im gonna do it. its not my dream car, but its a good price for a commuter car. i drive 80+ miles a day for work alteast 5 days a week

Cruze is a 2011 1LT, 1.4T 6speed Auto. Crystal red. no sunroof or spolier, but thats minor. here is the car...
Chevrolet : Cruze 1LT in Chevrolet | eBay Motors

its th eold, completed auction. probably have to log in to see it

Unless you are just making that deal to help your dad, why not just keep the cobalt as a commuter? If you are just trying to help him out since he lost his job, I can understand that.

Dude this is awesome! I never knew you had this. While the cruze would be an awesome deal I've learned one thing, don't "settle" for something you think might be OK when it comes to cars. Always get EXACTLY what you want. Plus I think just selling this one would get ya some nice $$$

Even if your trying to do it to help your dad, you can always just have him sell his cruze and pick up a cheap balt

well it would be settling, but i would still have my SS and my Nova, its not that i dont like the car, id just rather have an LTZ. I've always said the same thing, spend a little more and get what you want. but im going to be into this 06 LS for around $1k, and gonna get 5000 for it in theroy. his car books a Private party retail for 14.

My SS has 165K on it, and it would be nice to have something with less miles and less wild to drive. i know my car doesnt make a ton of power, but with the poly mounts, header-back and the drop, driving into the city gets me in trouble. i've gotten a couple tickets and a few warnings 2 for loud exhaust. so this would turn into somehting a litttle more responsible. i may also still buy his for 9, sell mine for a littel bit and then take his in to trade it. IDK exactly what ill do yet
