Air box question?
I am thinking of putting in a drop in K&N air filter instead of a CAI. A day ago I swiss cheesed the top of air box. Is that going to do anything or not?

I wouldnt leave it with the stock filter in there.
stocker is just paper....water + paperfilter is not great.
is there sufficient drainage in case you let water in the top? dont want to make it a swimming pool for your filter...

that will most likely LOSE you performance, because the air is no longer streamlined. imagine you're blowing through a straw. now, cut a few holes in the straw and see how hard you can blow. you're blowing just as hard, but the air is much more spread out, and doesn't flow anywhere near as quickly. get a new airbox ASAP

When you say top do you mean on the lid part where the tube connects to the throttle body is connected?If it is the lid you put holes in the air filter is being bypassed and dirt will get in your engine.If you mean the top half of the bottom I think it would be ok probably be a bit louder .How big are the holes? I wouldn't waste money on a cold air intake. I have the air box mod on my sc except I cut the whole side out of the air box.I see under .5 lbs scip on the aeroforce sometimes at max rpm.though.

I made a 6 inch cirlcel and made about 30-50 small holes directly in the center of the top lid. I do hope that it will be ok? what I am trying to do is push out about 215 hp with as little money as possible. I have right know 151 hp which is not a lot, but I have raced a couple blazers, old honda civic, and one old honda Accord and did well, but I wish it could be better. The cobalt weighs around 2600 lbs and that is a lot.
My next investment is spark plugs and wires, and muffler. see what I can do with the horse power from there. I am thinking I can get around 8-12 more horse power from these mods. Cost factor is 178.00.
Any suggestions please let me know.

dude you made holes after the air filter. if they are on the top, like you said, then you are letting unfiltered air into your engine. that means large dirt particals, leaves, what ever can get in there now will. you need a new air box soon.

with the sports package your governor is set to around 120. with no mods, i would say the 2.2 is drag limited to much lower than 142, unless your speedo is just way off. there's no way a stock 2.2 is getting to 142. the ss/sc takes a while to get to 142, and has about 100 more whp stock.

I was afraid of that. To really do it right I would have spend around 2500-3500. The SS Sadan pushes 173-178 hp I know that I can get 20 hp some how? 151 hp diagnostic was done a couple weeks ago. The actual Cobalt with 2.2 liter 148-150hp. My Cobalt is really weird I bought the car in 05 I was one of the first to purchase a Cobalt in my area at the time.
I worked for a Dealership and my boss ordered this Cobalt special. This is what it has. 2.2 liter ecotec, Sport suspension, 16 inch aluminum rims, XM radio, Cloth Seats, and Sport Exhaust.
The other thing that is weird is that some guys I have talked to said that the newer Cobalts have a governer and that the top end is 115 mph. Mine does not have a governer, My step son can back me up on this I have gone 142 mph in this Cobalt and still was climbing. The only thing I saw that the revlimiter would kick in when in park at 4000 rpm. Any explainations?????

No!!! The holes are small, but I figure that a Col intake is wide open with no coverr this can be used multi-usage. Helps from getting a bunch of dirt, but gives just the right cool air when needed.

i'm 25. how old are you? 
i'm not the one that comes onto an internet forum and starts lying about my car that probably puts down less than stock power and makes rediculous claims... it's certainly entertaining though

Take a look at his gallery it says 121 is max speed. But the funny thing is i almost believed him cause i have hit 130 in my 2.4 ss and i had room to goo, but mine is also manual. with an auto there is no way lol. nice try son, again i have said this before, there are 10,000+ members on this site, what is the point of lying atleast 1 person if not 100s know what they are talking about lol, you will get called out eventually nice try man

Beleive me or not. Like I said before do not need to lie. You could see my pics in the gallery and see the GPS with the max speed AT THAT TIME. My son has seen it and I have had other guys from other clubs see the speed, so if you want to cut me down and call me a lair that is your deal, but like I said "I DO NOT NEED TO LIE"

First of all smart ass, My car is not quick it is fast. Climbing speed is good. I just ran it again I have the pic up in a few minutes. I almost hit 124mph but for some reason the traffic is like so conjested.
I will find the open road that I need. The place I did 140+ was going to New York a year ago. There was one area that was straight and long. Arounf here the fastest I have had it is around 130MPH.

I would find a stock airbox lid before taking your car in for warranty work, and before you find a new lid I would tape over the holes before you do permanent damage to the engine. The engine bay gets really dusty on these cars.

this thread = good for a laugh. A 2.2 Cobalt with an CAI, header, exhaust and a 50 squeeze of nitrous barely made it to 135 (and anyone that says I have a speed limiter...Yes I do..However it doesnt work when the VSS wire is cut). GPS says 135 and its usually within 2-3 MPH of the stock speedo..
Theres no way a stock cobalt automatic is going faster then that.

Today I went and ran my car hard and wanted to see if the custom filter cover would hinder the car in any way and it ran very well. No dust in the filter. engine tep was just a couple of degrees less then normal.
I will see how it runs later this week.
