any idea what this is?

So, when I got this car a year ago I saw something that I have not seen on another cobalt so I was like whatever. But since I wanna lower my car on springs I figure I better see if its gonna be a problem. The thing I am talking about is the piece of metal that hangs down like 1.5 inches below my muffler that i circled in the picture. If any one has any idea what it is please let me know. The right corner of it is a little bent as you can tell from the picture

My car has that too.

I don't see why it would be a problem? No way it will scrape the ground with just springs. I have no idea what it's for, maybe just extra protection?

its just a piece of the body construction. The car comes from the factory with a piece of plastic that covers it. It wont hit the ground

Wont scrape, mines lowered and the lowest point of my car is the transmission pan, then the oil pan.

Those are what you need to worry about.

i dont have spring on yet if u had read my original post, which also states that the right corner is bent which means that even without being lowered, the metal piece still hit something.

Just a piece to hide some of the under-workings of your car i think. Just for "beautification" purposes I guess.

Either that are it's a fart defuser

it is just a piece of platic that covers up the metal area where your spare sits. You can take it off it just bolts off but it looks even worse than it is now. I had to take it off when i swapped my ls rear bumper for a ss bumper

when u stand behind the car u can see the black plastic piece. If you take it off you will see the bare metal it hides. the plastic piece is there because black camoflauges it more

If you can see the spare pan at all, or a crooked cut would make it uglier. Guess im just confused about the dislike from it. Its barely noticable, or even that objectionable to my eye.

Buy an SS bumper. Problem solved, all it is is cosmetic and it covers up the end panel which is where your battery and spare tire are located.

So far I have not seen anybody complain about that scraping, and not to mention it is higher up AND closer to your rear axle then your exhaust tip and muffler.
