cel p0420

i have a 2006 ls with 105,000 miles..It had been sitting for several months, because it had a problem of just dying after a few minutes...well, we finally found the problem, after several attempts, it was the wiring going into the crankshaft sensor. ran great about 3 days, now throwing a p0420. i was thinking about getting a tune with hptuners, but they dont support 06 2.2. i dont think trifecta is supporting it anymore also..what about those spacers to get rid of the CEL? i have heard some say they will make the mixture run too lean? whats my best option to get rid of the CEL?

thanks

P0420 indicates that the ECM is comparing the upstream o2 sensor to the downstream or post-catalytic converter o2 sensor and determining that the catalytic converter isn't working properly. It's the upstream o2 sensor that adjusts fueling so you don't have to worry about this making you run lean. It shouldn't really affect drivability at all as it it's only function is to indicate whether or not the cat is working properly. I wouldn't think it would be related to your crankshaft wiring but what exactly was wrong there? I suppose it could be caused by bad wiring depending on what issue you actually had. If you have stock exhaust it would probably be a good idea to inspect your cat and make sure it isn't clogged up or anything. Is your exhaust stock?

hi thanks for the reply. I dont think it is related to the problem i had with the wiring going into the crankshaft senor.. (this was a super tough problem to find, changed crankshaft sensor 3 times, car would run for 5 min then start misfiring and die. did throw crankshaft code a couple times. but it turned out to be in the wiring entering the sensor losing contact in the plug) yes cat is all stock. i cant see anything wrong physically. i did run about 3 tanks with lucas fuel injection cleaner when we got it running again, just before the p0420 came up, because it had been sitting a long time. ive been reading all i can find on the upstream and downstream o2 sensors. i know it said on some cars the downstream was also joining in now to calculate the fuel mix.. but not sure if this would apply to 06 ls 2.2? so there shouldn't be any damage to engine by using one of those o2 extenders? i really wanted to get tuned, but that doesnt look like an option for 06 2.2.
thanks

The downstream O2 is used to test catalyst efficiency. It be run really anywhere between .1v - .9v but should be steady. When it starts to move in slight response to the air fuel ratio the cat is either not warmed up yet or no longer doing its job.
