F35 swap
I've been digging all over trying to find info on this. I found that the SS halfshafts will fit in the LS hubs, the front and rear trans mounts have to be swapped, the 2.2L clutch has the same spline count as the 2.0L. What I'm trying to figure out is if the LS shifter cables/shifter assembly will work on the F35. I know I will have to get my ecu re-programmed for the different gear ratios. I'm just sick of the weak ass F23 trans. It is without a doubt the worst POS manual trans I've ever had the displeasure of using. The F35 is a much better unit and if I can swap it into my car fairly easily, then I will keep the little turd and build it for boost. If not, then off to the chopping block it goes.

Clutch isn't a direct bolt in IIRC.
|
if anything, just get different gears. the f35 does NOT bolt onto the 2.2/2.4
|
the f23 is a decent trans btw.
|
Why won't it ''bolt up''? Aren't the 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 all GenII blocks from 2008 up? I can't see the engines being that different. And no, the F23 isn't a ''decent'' trans by any stretch. I've put more real abuse through a 4cyl T-5 than this F23 will ever see and it lived. I'm now on my 4th one. And this one sounds like it has no trans fluid in it.
|
you just seem too damn hard on it. dont floor it in first.
|
F23 is actually good. Driver mod needed?
|
yup
|
Search around. Several other people have looked into this, but I think everyone's been deterred by cost.
I know the main point of contention has always been the clutch. I know at one point someone was going to contact I believe it was Exedy about having an F35 clutch made but redrilled to mate with the 2.2, but nothing ever came of it. Bottom line it isn't a direct swap, fab work is involved for sure. |

I personally think that purely based on Torque ratings, the best GM FWD transmissions are (in order)
the torque ratings are taken from memory... and mine isn't always perfect. If you go over on J-body dot org, you will see that they knock the F35, like nothing else; You can do some things to improve the F23's ability to take a good beating... I like the F35 ~ but question some of it's quoibles ~ I also think that driven resonsibly, the F23 should be able to take any abuse you throw at it... if you want a real turd, look at the Isuzu unit used on all 1995-2000 J-bodies... |
my f23 is looking at 198 wtq right now.. it's solid... the only thing i hate about it is the 1st to 2nd gear pulls...

the getrag282 is the one that has been used behind many a FWD-V8 & Fiero-V8 swap... |
i know it can handle more, but if the OP is saying they're shit, it's not completely correct.

Yout need to run a custom flywheel that has the friction area of the LSJ but the bolt pattern of the l61, you need to run an LSJ clutch (which we all know suck for the most part, unlike L61 clutches), you will need the trnas spacer like the lsj, and you need the chassis side trans mount pockets welded into the frame. All in order to get a weaker trans with worse clutch options.
Instead put an LSD and RP or Redline atf in the f23 with a stock pressure plate + the act 6 puck clutch disk (you can find it listed under 2.2 cobalt on summit), and be golden to about 400 wheel. If you need to go up to 600, you have to drop the coil on a good bully clutch. |
Its funny that I see quite a few F23 guys that want to switch to the "better" F35...
...and then there are the high horsepower F35 guys that want to switch to the F23. A couple have, actually. |

The op must not really know how to drive. My car has mulitple track runs at over 300wtq and no issues what so ever on the trans end.
|
the F35 trans input shaft is larger then the F23.Stick with the F23.It's made by Getrag,:)My F23 has been put through hell and is still in one piece with no grinds
|
i wish i was 5 speed:thumbsdow
|
Just be glad you don't have the Aisin trans that came in the 03-04 Ions lol
|
I can drive standard quite well. I've been driving stick for longer than most people on this forum have been driving. I can assure you it's not me. I have a lemon of a car, pure and simple. I'm wondering if the cables, shifter or brackets aren't working properly causing all of this headache. All I know is less than 500 miles driving it fairly easy and it's back @ the stealership for the 5th time. God I hope they get it fixed soon so I can get rid of it. Let it be someone elses problem.

My f23 has had over 300 wtrq for 40-50k now I just keep breaking axles I wanna swap lnf axles hubs and spindles I just don't know if the splines are the same

Stop wheel hopping. Or see if you can swap to cavy axles, as ours seem to be strong as shit.

I beat my car like it burned my dinner, it's got almost 93k on it, original clutch and has no problems.
Why do so many cobalt owners say they have crap trans, not just the na cars but all of them, are there just that many people that do really dumb stuff to them? |
slamming gears and wheel hop is the main reason they fail.
Id say its driver error. |
There are F23's that are behind +500-600whp ecotecs and 2.4 Twin Cams that have no issues.
Hell a guy on J-Body.org blew his F23 Quaife LSD before anything else in the trans let go, swapped it out for a welded factory diff and its still in action. He runs in the 10's btw. If your blowing the trans its from misuse, sorry to say, but many people have no issues with the F23 with MUCH more power than your making. Hell my F23 has over 300 drag strip lauches on it, all of those on slicks, most of those being in the 1.7-1.8 60' range. Never grinds, misses a gear or gives me trouble. Its a much better trans than the SAAB F35 IMO. |
x30... 134k miles of abuse here and my trans is the only thing that hasn't given me an issue. F23 here...

All this bs and no one answered the op original question

He asked the question 6 years ago and I doubt he still has the car. It was answered- it's not a direct fit, read through the comments. And settle down.

Who cares if he still has the car? I did a search looking to see if the shifter is interchangeable between the SS F35 trans and the base F23 trans. Read thru all the posts and still dont have an answer. Do you know?

Also I should point out the thread is about swapping an F35 into an F23 transmission, not if the shifter works or not. Take a chill pill man.
