First drive in a Cobalt

Hey guys.. I was out looking for a car tonight, and of course a Cobalt LT was on my list of things to check out.

I test drove a well represented one on the freeway and it was so-so. I wasn't floored by it, but it also wasn't anything bad. But after driving my 96 cav for 4 years now, it just seemed like a Cav with a new suit and tie.

on a 48 month lease, the best the man could do was $235/month.

Others were an '06 Jetta with leather, heated seats, moon roof.. $1,000 down (trade in cavy) and $263/month for 39 months. not too bad at all, imho, when compared to the cobalt deal.

Also, the F150 deal that's going on right now for $99/month for 2 years wasn't too bad, until I saw $3,000 down.

So I dont know.. I guess there is just a little research to do yet, I was just wondering what people thought of the VW.

Thanks a lot

1. Your on a Cobalt Site....
2. If you state that you "wasn't (weren't) floored by it" I'd suggest that you don't get a cobalt as most of the people on this forum are very happy cobalt enthusiasts (sp?) key word being enthusiasts (sp.... i know...). So honestly I'd say keep looking around really... and VW= good german engineering... but bubbly ugly cars imo...

Yeah I picked it up tonight. Too great of a deal to pass up. Believe it or not, this car is a total chick magnet. I got a 14 year old girls phone number taped to my fries at McDonalds.. while my girlfriend was right next to me! haha.. I didn't say 'desirable' chick magnet, just chick magnet.

I am amazed by this car.. I'll post pics tomorrow when I can get some daylight ones

ugh.....Cavalier does not belong in the same sentence as Cobalt.....opps

I am seriously glad I never owned a Cavalier.

The Cobalt is so much better---cause if it wasn't I would not have bought it.

Here is a sentence... "When the Cavalier operation was ended, the Cobalt took it's place."

Why would you say that?

Saying that you hate cavaliers is like saying you hate your father.. why would you say THAT?

I never had any problems in my tenure with the Cav, the fuel pump went once.. other than that, it went great until I turned it in at 90K.

I can't say anything negative about the Cobalt either. It just wasn't me or something.. but that's not important. Chevy pretty much always make a good car.

then how would you explain where the 2.2L motor came from?

Yeah I picked it up tonight. Too great of a deal to pass up. Believe it or not, this car is a total chick magnet. I got a 14 year old girls phone number taped to my fries at McDonalds.. while my girlfriend was right next to me! haha.. I didn't say 'desirable' chick magnet, just chick magnet.
I'm hoping you look young, or she looks younger than she was. Or maybe your were playin some R.Kelly. Good luck with the car though. I've drivin an auto Jetta and it was a nice ride.

I test drove a well represented one on the freeway and it was so-so. I wasn't floored by it, but it also wasn't anything bad. But after driving my 96 cav for 4 years now, it just seemed like a Cav with a new suit and tie.
Where you not impressed by the performance or the overall ride of it? I've drivin a 2.2L auto cobalt and other than a noticable lack of low-end it felt like a smoother ride than my cav (96 Z24) but it was brand new and i'm at 140k so maybe it wasn't the best compro, but I still think it was better.

I'm not sure. I think the actual problem was. that after being a member here for so long.. and reading millions of positive comments and accolades that you give the Cobalt.. I developed nearly impossible expectaions for it.

That's probably why I said I wasn't 'floored' by it. When I was driving it that night.. I was in a mid-sized Chevy. and I suppose I felt KINDA like I had been driving the car for the past 4 years. Maybe it was time for a change?

I have no plans of leaving you guys on this forum either, because I still like your car! Nor do I feel like joining VW Vortex! haha Basically because it's leased, and I dont wanna see any mods that would tempt me. lol

Okay I will say two nice things about the Cavalier. It was cheap and I have heard lots of anecdotal stories about reliability.

It was behind the times of every other car in its segment. Egronomics, interior, enginering were all sub-par and old!

GM abandoned it so long ago that the very name was dropped.
No matter how good the Cobalt is---it never could have carried the Cavalier name without the stigma of Cavalier.

Now the Cobalt is modern and IMO, world class. I have driven the Mazda 3 and Ralliart and it is just as good. You could never say that about the Cavalier.

it did not come from a Cavalier. It came from MANY other cars. (Alero, Saturns, Grand Am ect) It was not designed for specific use in the Cavalier---but many applications that far predate its intorduction into the Cavalier.

Saturn had the ecotec first in North America---but I think it first debuted in Austrailia in 99
(lost my info, so I am trying to go from memory

sure, lets talk about Mitsubishi and Mazda's AWESOME reliability and longevity...

I don't care of the Cavalier was behind the times, old, tacky, fugly, whatever... I drove the ******* wheels of each and every one I had, beating the life right out of and every single Cavalier (6 of them) never ever left me stranded. -40F, turn the key, engine starts, off we go...

And Avro, the Alero was an N-body... which can be traced right back to the X-body (that's right, Citation/Pheonix/Omega/Skylark)...
it's like an FWD family tree starting in 1978:
X-Body= Chevrolet Citation/Pontiac Pheonix/Oldsmobile Omega/Buick Skylark
A-Body= Chevrolet Celebrity/Pontiac 6000/Oldsmobile Ciera/ Buick Century
J-Body= Chevrolet Cavalier/Pontiac J2000-Sunbird-Sunfire/ Oldsmobile Firenza/Buick Skyhawk/ Cadillac Cimarron
L-Body= Chevrolet Beretta/Chevrolet Corsica/Pontiac Tempest
N-Body= Chevrolet Malibu/Pontiac Grand Am/ Oldsmobile Calais-Achieva-Alero/Buick Somerset-Skylark
and for color... the P-Body (Pontiac Fiero) had the subframe from the front of an X/A-body stuffed in it's short little bum...
And these were like an inbred family from rural Alabama... you could mix and match these cars all day long.

If they were still making Cavaliers, I'd buy another one. I originally didn't want a Cobalt. I wanted an 05 Cavalier LS Sport (last of the Cavaliers!) I ended up getting a better deal on the Cobalt coupe. My friends didn't feel like waiting for the Cobalt and bought an 04 Cavalier coupe. They love it. I'm reserving judgement on the longevity of the Cobalt until I see one with over 100,000 miles on it with a small parts/repair receipt pile next to it...

As for the guy who bought the Jetta, make sure you get rid of it before the warranty is off of it. Just some words of warning.

I wasn't refering to reliability/longevity. Just modern up to date enginering. The Ralliart and Mazda 3 are excelllent. The Cobalt can match them, the Cavalier only sold cause of price and low interest rates.

Lets be honest here---you say yours was reliable ect and other people will say the same. I am sure we can find Mazda owners who have had great experinces too. This is all anecdotal not a scientific at all.

GM needs world class competive products, the Cavalier was around too long. If they just built cars as good as the Cavlier they'd be out of business.

Thanks for the Letter designations of the cars but I am not sure what you why you posted them.....?

and how do you know the N-body can trace it roots back to the X-body? I know the 60 degree OHV (2.8L, 3.1L, 3.1L Turbo, 3.4L, 3.4L DOHC, 3500 and 3900) goes back to the Citation but have never heard of the X-body spawning so many FWD platforms. Proof would be good if you can find some.

the advantages of being a mechanic and being around GM's forever... I had an 81 Citation X-11... the whole car may as well have been a A-body (Celebrity, etc)... J-bodies up to 1994 used the same cradle as the X/A cars did from 81 to 91. N-bodies were spun directly off the X/A-body from 1985 until 1992, then the chassis shared more in common with the L-body... W-bodies (Lumina, etc) were used the front end directly from an A-body, but their rear suspension was a nightmare... that transverse leaf spring sucked.

95+ J-bodies used the rear swingarm and engine cradle (not to mention some of the body stamping from the previous L-body (Beretta,Corsica)... Don't you guys ever get under these cars, go to junkyards and read crossover manuals? GM's are the easiest to repair because you can source parts from how many different car lines, IF you know what you're doing.

okay I see you know what your talking about....too many people claim to know things. So I learned something new.

I had 2 Citation X-11s--one a had a good body but was always breaking and and ran less then perfect, while the other had a bad body but a Holley 2bbl carb and ran great. Pulled 6500rpm easy

With an X11, 1981 and 1985 are THE years to have... What I liked about my X-11 was even though it had way over 125,000 miles on it, was an automatic, it would still pull violently to 6500RPM while still making power. Like the Cobalt SS, there was more power there than GM was letting on. I clipped several articles from Car & Driver and Motor Trend before the imports bought them off (lol)... they loved the car and in a dragrace, i **** you not, the Citation X11 would smoke a Porsche 924 of the same year... I could scan the articles if you're interested.
