Intake installation w/ 2006 Air Injection

So I just installed an air intake on a friends 06 2.2 that had that Air Injection BS. I just left the Air Injection tube chillin, because I couldnt figure out a way to hook it back up to the new CAI. Is it cool to leave the tube freeballin like that??

Where does it plug in on the stock intake?

Goto a local auto parts store and buy a breather filter. That line is suppose to get filtered air.

I thought it was injecting exhaust gasses into the air filter??

That's right, the air that goes in the filter is used by the engine and is then shot back into the air filter. LOL Now this makes me ask why we have an exhaust pipe???

Use your head

I figured it would be fine If I just left the tube unhooked, what does everyone think?

If its a K&N there is a place to hook it into the filter.

If not, check out the "air box mod" that others have done, and notice the small air filter that is on the engine.

I'm not talking about the Valve Cover breather

On the late model 2006's there's an EGR, which takes exhaust from the exhaust manifold, and re-injects it into the air filter

yes atleast filter the tube with a breather.....i think turbo tech is making an intake for the air injection.

Now I know exactly what you are talking about.

If is not connected, you may get a CEL. There has been big talk about this the past week because the Pacesetter header doesn't have the EGR port on it. There was a proposal that someone send there origional header to them so that the header could be redesigned to include the EGR port.

It should not hurt anyting, but like everything else you can do, it might give you a CEL.

My Pontiac had EGR...the tube got so old, though, that one of the rubber fittings cracked and broke, in effect getting rid of it. Had a CEL until I fixed it, but otherwise no noticable change in performance. I believe it's just there for emissions control - to burn cleaner and what not.

Maybe its just me...but could we see a picture of all this? I can't picture a tube coming out of the intake to goto the exhaust manifold....

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD IT IS NOT AN EGR!

Exhaust Gas Recirculation does in fact take exhaust gases and route them back through the intake side of the engine. But even if that was what you had, it doesn't go back through the air filter.

You have Air Injection. A completely different thing. Fresh air is being taken from the intake and injected into the exhaust gas at the manifold.

EGR takes air from the exhaust and sends it to the induction.
Air Injection takes air from the induction and send it to the exhaust.

The loose line you now have is sucking air, not blowing it. And it is injecting that air into your exhaust. It should probably have at least a small filter on the end of it.

but WHY?

lol, I don't mean to sound like a sarcastic ass, but I have no idea what the purpose of this is.

EGR/Air Injection is completly for emissions control.

And are we talking about the tube that runs from the valve cover to the intake tube? Because every cobalt has those....

Whats the point of injecting fresh air into the exhast manifold? It just doesnt make much sense to me

I'm not exactly sure myself of the reasons for it. I just know how it works. Specifically, the air is directed at the back of the exhaust valves. It enters the head via it's own separate casting hole, blows against the valve, and then gets carried out with the exhaust. This would:

Create a bit of back pressure inside the exhaust
Lean out the exhaust by adding fresh, unburned oxygen
Cool things off a bit

The reason I suggest a small filter is you don't want debris blowing on your exhaust valves.

Air injection is there to boost cat convertor efficiency because the car has more air to work with in changing co over to co2 and HCs in H20. Now its blowing directly into your exhaust so you have to have some filter on it so that you arent blowing crap right into your convertor and wrecking it along with plugging it and reducing your power.

Frankly I don't see what the big deal is with doing intake installs properly. Hook the PCV breather back to the intake downstream of the maf and hook the air injection upstream of the MAF after the filter. Its not that hard, I built my own intake and heat shield and it works great.
