Removing the Ac?
Removing the Ac?
Ok guys, to start, I NEVER use my air conditioning. I really dont like it. Does anyone know whats involved in removing the entire ac system? And should i expect to see any gains of any kind out of doing this?
i doubt this jackass plans on selling his car.
are you sure you wanna do that man? i mean damn it ain't reno but it sure can get hot as hell in a black balt.....................i should know.

u wont gain hp, but you will free some up, faster rev's, faster responce...but no AC? keep everything you take off incase you want to sale it...you will need to remove the compressor and either buy or make a AC delete pulley, which is just a dummy pulley, unless the belt will go with out, as far as routing it, cuz if you can route to get rid of it, you might just be able to get a smaller belt, what size idk...best way is the AC delet pulley which i dont know if they make for this car...
no a/c and those mrz lightwieght pullies and i do believe that just may free up power. the lack of a/c would make the pullies worth it as i hear a/c may not work right after that mod anyway.
damn 13 sec ls. i shoulda got a 5 spd coupe......**** that saloon ftmfw!

you guys know that when you're not using the a/c that the pulley on it should spin rather freely, right?
you know that your front defroster will stop functioning if you remove the a/c, right?
i'm pretty sure that when you go WOT that the a/c disables temporarily anyway.
so go right ahead if you like. i wouldn't. if you're environmentally or safety conscious i would recommend taking it to a shop to have them evacuate the refrigerant before you go disconnecting things.

I've seen tests on a dyno where they did a before test with the A/C turned off and the defrost turned off and an after test with it removed and a shorter belt. It only made like 1 or 2 HP gains. Definitely not worth the time and the hassle if you ask me.

Well i wasnt gonna take it out and get rid of it. I was thinking that it would free up some power, and take some weight out. I mean i NEVER use it. im considering it, just weighing out the options.
do you use the defroster at all? because if you do, you DO use the a/c
and again, the cons far outweigh the pros of this mod
removing the evaporator is generally very involved. it usually means ripping out almost all of the dashboard. simply messing with the a/c system without properly emptying it of refrigerant is a safety hazard (freeze burns, frostbite, etc) and an environmental hazard
removing the a/c compressor would either involve going to a shorter belt or adding an idler pulley on a bracket. an a/c compressor pulley with the clutch disengaged has a negligible difference in rotational inertia as an idler pulley, so ther would be no difference there.
i agree that removing all of the components might save you some weight, but heck...drive around on 1/4 tank of gas versus a full tank and that ought to save you close to the same amount of weight.
