Replacing inline resonator with a straight pipe?

I want my car to sound a bit better, but A: I m not spending 500 on a catback to make the car just a little bit less slow, and B: I dont want something loud and ricey sounding. Basically I jsut want something that has a little bit more of a growl to it when you get on it, thats all. So I was wondering, what does it sound like with the resonator removed? Factory muffler still to keep it quiet, but with just a little bit more of a growl. Anyone tried this?

Eh, it dosent sound like a great idea. You'll definetly hear a lot more drone in the car more than anything else. If you want some noise just put on a different muffler or get a resinated tip and weld it on. Thats what I did for mine, just went to Advanced Auto and got a tip and through it on, you can noticed it when I get on it.

Thats what I m wondering, how much that resonator actually quiets it down. I was actually thinking about sticking something like a flowmaster or a magnaflow on, but thought I might see if anyones tried this first, it wouldnt cost me anything to do, oh well.

I wouldn't remove the resonator, if you've ever heard a resonatorless system they all sound ricey

please spend the extra money and get the catback, if your giong to put performance mods on, then you will need a way for that exhaust to escape.

im a big fan of the pacesetter, it sounds sweet. And i wouldnt worry to much about rust in Bama... You can always rustoleum spray it before you put it on, and just get an underbody wash every once and awhile.

Just get an SS exhaust. My 2.2L sounds awesome with one. Quiet until you hammer the gas then it's only slightly louder then the stock exhaust but sounds a lot more "tuned" then it used to also. You wouldn't be disappointed.

Well, like I said before, I m not worried about performance, this cars not fast and its not going to be without a lot of money, so a catback is out of the question. An SS catback however sounds intresting, I d like to hear it on a 2.2, although I d have to find someone around here looking to get rid of theirs on the cheap. Or, I could see about putting another resonator inline and adding a nice muffler. Either way, i dont want my car to sound like a honduh with a coffee can on it so I guess taking the factory resonator out is not an option.

yeah, the car was made to run and sound like it does with the resonator... (and will u pass emmisions inspection with out one?) so yeah, just get a new muffler or something of that sort.. or order **** from magnaflow or hott exaust and u can fab up ur own exaust for less than 250.. we did that to my friends cavi.. sounds good and bigggg performance, only problem he got exited and didnt take his time.. so it hangs a little

I never got the point of putting all the SS stuff on the LS. Like the exhaust system, what gains do you get? Theres not that big of a difference is there?

once again, its not the performance gains that I m looking for here, just a little more agressive, but still subdued sound.

I REMOVED THE RESONATOR ON MY SYSTEM. I put the magnaflow muffler right where the resonator used to be. Personally i like the way it sounds, some say its ricy some say it sounds good. At first it was too loud for my liking, and i almost went and had the system redone. After a couple of weeks it seemed to quiet down a bit. I love the way it sounds now. I'll see if i can get my video posted.

this is where the resonator used to be. now there is the magnaflow muffler

the stock muffler is no longer there

with the exception of the bend over the axel, it is pretty much a straight shot from the end of the muffler(under driver seat) to the tip

im having trouble uploading the video on street fire. is there a better site to use?

again the video does not do the exhaust justice. it sounds alot better in person. i had more videos with some drive bys and in car, but they didnt turn out. the soonest i could get another video would be about a week. if you would like i can get it done.

everyone let me know what you think.

wtf?! is that an actual muffler and tip in the resonator spot? you do know that magnaflow makes resonators right?

regardless I wouldn't call that removing the resonator, only replacing it...although with the missing rear muffler it would have the same effect. on my old car I kept the resonator and ditched the stock rear mufflers, could get raspy in the higher rpms

I've never been able to find Magnaflow "resonators" on Magnaflow's site or in Summit's catalog. Just 4" round "mufflers". That's what I used to replace my stock resonator, a 4" round 14" long Magnaflow "muffler". I still have a rear muffler though too

Please show me a link to a Magnaflow "resonator".

I think the principle of what he did is kinda neat and simplistic; it's kind of like half of an SRT-4 exhaust. Although I agree with you that a 4" round won't have much muffling capability at high RPM.

The Magnaflow rounds do sound a lot better once they get some carbon buildup in them. My Magnaflow "resonator" actually made my exhaust sound quieter and cleaner at low RPM's paired with my Borla turbo muffler, compared to the stock resonator.
