Safe Upgrades
First let me say that I am a newb in all things related to cars (essentially, I know the gas pedal makes it go, and the brake makes it stop, and I can change the brake pads as long as they are disc) With that being said... What kind of upgrades can be done to the 2.2 to increase hp and torque? I would be interested in taking it up 70 to 100 horses, nothing too crazy (like 500 horses hehe). what kind of parts would I need, and is this too much stress on the engine? would I need to replace some stock with sturdier parts?

Well 100 horse is gunna push the car quite a bit. I am also in the same boat as you! From what I've seen so far, the car will take 283 HP before the Pisons and pison rods break and fly out of the block.
Say you threw the best Intake(8HP), Header(13HP), Muffler(5HP), Cat(5HP), and upgraded to 2.5"(5HP) pipe, I would guess you'd be pushing about 170-175 Horse from the stock 145. Just rough estimation.
After that you can install a turbo kit like this one and to do that you'll also need new pistons and rods.
After you do all that you should be at about 260 horse. According to this web site, that should be enough to have a daily driver / race track car. I would estimate it would run 12s?
I'm a noob too, but this is what I've picked up so far

OK guys I've posted this before...... you can not just add hp ratings together. When you add one part along with another part you never get the hp rating total from each part seperatly. I.e. 10 hp with CAI and 30 hp from header does not equal 40 hp, reality it would come out to about 20-25 hp. As you add parts one relys on the other. I know your both newbies to this but you will find this out as you start adding parts. Just keep looking for post of modifications to cars and ask for dyno sheets to back up their statements on hp ratings, then you will know what gives you what hp. Just to let you know I am dyno'g my SS/sc when I get it to get stock ratings before I do anything to it.

Yeah I know you can't just add horsepower up like 10 from intake + 15 from exuast, as the yall fall on eachother. However I was thinking if you upgraded the intake and added full header back exaust like I said it would probably give you about 30 horse. I just then broke down what each would probably give you (based on what little I know).

Well we won't know for sure until we see some dyno numbers, but hey we need our cars first! ITs not bad to estimate, around roughly 30 horse you could put out with those parts, but every engine is different. We will just see how the 2.2 responds.

You gotta find a gargae near you with a Dyno, and Im not sure if your familiar with 'Import Invasion' they have down in the Renegade Stadium (I dont know how far you are from it, but I know your in NY), They always run Dyno pulls throughout the whole show, otherwise the closest place for me is 'Visions of Speed' where they have a dyno in there garage.

But seriously, from what I have seen, on just about any engine there are a few areas to work on to gain hp. They are
Breathing - Better, smoother intake and exhaust... Lets the engine open up a little more...
Fuel delievery - Better, more precise delievery = more efficient combustion
Ignition - Better, hotter spark yields more even and efficient combustion = more power. however, don't expect a bunch here on a stock engine. If you start doing other things, it can help out a BUNCH!
Valvetrain - Cam, rockers, etc... Basically helps out in the breathing aspect, but also can reduce the internal friction in the engine and net more than a few ponies
Power Pullies - Slows the accesories on the engine, thereby eating less power.
That's basically the rundown on SIMPLE to moderately simple things that can be done to the engine to make it produce anywhere from 3 more hp, to 100 more hp... it all depends on the $$$ and time you want to spend...
