It should easily be able to do more then that. What was your RPM at that speed? Try 4th gear if you have some room left to red line.

typically your overdrive (or second overdrive) gear(s) is/are totally for fuel economy. Your motor makes its horsepower at a higher RPM then you were running at 98 MPH in fifth gear. Essentially, you were drag limited because you were in too high of a gear. Try running it in fourth if you are all fired up about top speed and see where it ends up. Once you redline fourth, you might go up a touch in 5th or you might drop down, just depends on the power output after your 4-5 shift.

i took my 05 LS out with two friends and toped it out at 120mph. It took me a good while to get going that fast but you can go much faster than 98.

From what i have learned the base cobalts have different governed speeds depending on the tires that u got from factory. The base cobalt with continental tires is governed at 105 ish and the ones with the upgraded tires i have heard can go as far as 120. I have also heard rumors that if you upgrade your tires to a higher speed rating that GM will flash you comp for that higher speed.

No he isn't. Speeding, especially 100mph, in the rain is a recipe for killing yourself...

100 MPH in the rain is ass holish. Not only are you putting your self in danger, but everyone else on the road as well. That was pure stupidity, and I dont want anyone trying to justify it.

I had my dealer reflash my comp. for my new rims, they were like .5 in bigger than stock rim and tire combo so they did the reflash with the new specs and tire rating. Charged me nothing and the limiter is gone as far as I can tell.

ok i got the ls coupe with the sport package and a 5 speed if i red line 4th i get 120 and it just seams to cut fuel after that cause i dont accelerate much in 5th but from what ive read it come down to tires my tires are rated to 130 so the limit is set at 120 the other tires are 112 and most poeple with those get to about 105 or 108

how about you dont try topping your car out until you know how to drive it first... i only say this since you obviously cant drive a stick too well if you didnt know to downshift.

amen...out of all the opportunities you have to do that something pops in your little brain and tells you to do it then. W1nN3r

I also agree that you need to learn how to drive better, it doesn't take long at all to hit the governor in 4th gear. But if you are having a hard time try dropping it down into 2nd...

Yeah, I got my base model right up to 105, and it was a smooth ride up to 105, but then the oh so rude governer kicked in and dropped me down pretty quick.

That was definately a rude and unwanted surprise. But if the tires arent rated for higher than that, I can appreciate the limiter.

well first off when ur at 100mph in 5th ur at what like around 3500 rpms? with the cobalts gearing of 3.58 :;assuming u have a 05 non ss s/c:: the car wont get much power....why not stay in 4th at 100mph? i mean u can get to 125mph in 4th and be at 6200rpms.....why be in 5th at 100mph?

Hey bro,

You need to chill out. Cut the attitude and cursing and maybe people will respect you.
