Top Speed Iz Slow

I was just on the highway, finally found a long path of empty road, so I thought I'd floor it.... 4th gear maxxed out at 160 km/h so i shifted it into 5th... and it went up to 165-170 km/h than it started jerking like I was maxing the gear... Why is it like this? I was able to go 190 km/h in my moms civic and all it had was intake... Is there anythign I can do to make it go higher than that?

Well I'm not sure what model your driving, but I know that the base cobalt has a limitation set at 105mph. When you hit the max speed limit the car starts jerking similar to what you described.

For the second question, I would also like to know. I've heard the cars do not have 'chips' anymore, that is it flash instead. Therefore, I'm not so sure how the limitation can be removed, because the car can definately go faster than 105mph.

Yep, sounds like the limiter. Splitting the difference on your 165-170 at 167.5 converts to just over 104MPH.

I believe that would be the preset top speed limit of the base model Cobalt :

https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/general-cobalt-68/hit-governor-my-base-cobalt-3452/

170kph = 105.6mph

It's certainly controlled by the computer, and likely eventually someone will have ways of working around it.
Make sure you have higher speed rated tires as well though.

No, Not happening. Dude, It's a 25ct Resistor from RadioShack. You plug it into a plug under the hood, And it tricks your computer into thinking it's getting more fuel. Might actually harm your engine.

Mine goes well past 170km/h. I've gotten my auto base model to 198km/h. It all depends on the tires and limiter settings.

Yeh, there's no way anything like that from ebay will be going on my car. From threads on these forums and other talk about items similar to that on ebay, the chip is just a plain rip-off...

I mean saying that it's a 'chip' for a cobalt proves that the seller doesn't have a clue about the underhood of a cobalt. Since it's all flash and no chips now days...

I got my LS coupe model with the sport package to around 185 kmph (115 mph) and this is with an automatic, I was still able to easily go faster I was only at about 3500 rpm. I woulda have gone faster but I was coming up to traffic, and was trying to look out for CHIPS. Dun like those motorcycle highway patrol cops, pain in the a$$.

yea I got my 06' Auto LT up to 111mph with a ton of room to spare, just a quick question though, but does the governor change at all with the sport package, because I know the gauges do, but is just all for show and basically im still getting the same performance as in the LS?

If you have the sport model with H-rated tires, the limiter will be set higher. An H-rating allows contnuous speeds of 130 MPH.

If you guys think the Cobalt's limiter kicks in at a low speed, try driving an S10- mine was limited at 90...

Uh one question to the fact that the cobalt doesn't run on a "chip".
A "chip" is usually refering to EPROMs.
A Flash is simply another chip and is also a PROM. But it can be programmed directly in place without a special burner.
There HAS to be a way to crack this. I have personally used an EPROM Programer to send to a FLASH chip for work, it works fine.
Its all the same, just more versatile now. A program to send directly to the FLASHROM is all that is needed. Oh yeah and the actual code to change this. Good Luck with that, I am just a techhead, not a programmer.

i've got my lt coupe up to about 105, and still had plenty to go... i live in north new jersey, and there's not really any roads where i can just open it up... too much traffic and windy hilly roads here... at 105, i stepped on the gas quick and it jumped, and still handled smoothly

I have an 05 base with the 18" wheel package... I got mine up to 115 mph here in missouri! I thought it had the 105 limiter on it too. My wifes Grand AM GT stopped before mine did! I thought it was rather funny!
