Turbo by Garrett

Hey guys just wanted to let everyone know some interesting news. I just got back from the final NOPI show of the season and there was a turbo vendor there called Turbo by Garrett. I started talking to one of the reps about a kit for the cobalt. He informed me that there would be a complete kit coming out in November for the 2.2L. The kit will include all piping, the turbo, and all tuning equipment. He made it sound like the tuning would be a new computer for the car. He also said that the kit would produce 7lbs of boost which isnt very much but it would add 85hp to give a grand total of 230 horses. The main reason why they actually produced the kit was for the upcoming SEEMA show but instead of just making a one off kit they would release it to the public as well seeing how the 2.2L is the most popular version of the cobalt. All the details are said to be on their site but I couldnt find it. It your interested you can check the site yourself and get their contact info at http://www.turbobygarrett.com/

If you can't beat the ECM... replace it. I wonder if they'd sell they're new ECM and make it usuable to custom tune a N/A 2.2?

Check the top right corner for "Search"... Fill out the form that comes up. The only kit is comes up with for the 2005-2006 Cobalt 2.2L is made, wait no assymbled by Maximum Boost... meaning it's crap.

I will keep waiting for an actual ECU tune.

While your waiting for that turbo to spool, I'll be gone! My torque curve comes on real early, and I'm not even tuned yet! This does open up the possibility for a slightly modified version to suit my needs though! Either way, it's great to see the Cobalts getting some much needed aftermarket following.

Bad place to do business with from what I'm told. Their reputation is not that good, thus they are no longer a supporting vendor on this site.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I'm sorry I have to laugh.

Finally a reputable company gives you guys hopes and who are they doing business with...

MAXIMUM FREAKIN BOOST! lol, that's ******* great in irony of course.

I'm sure Frank really has a great tuning method for you guys...I wish I could show you the kit he made for his old cavalier. Non-intercooled junky turbo setup.

Another reason you guys shouldn't buy the kit...

If anyone noticed on that page, it says you get a 12:1 FMU...you can't use an FMU on the 2.2, you guys have returnless fuel systems.

If you guys don't know what an FMU does, it restricts the fuel on the return side of the fuel system so it builds up the fuel pressure in the fuel rail. Being returnless basically makes this part useless.

And the picture that he shows you is basically every kit he sells...it's all universal parts minus the manifold. He buys everything off of ebay and suckers people into buying them. He does 0 R & D and cons people into thinking they have a fully functional turbo kit. He didn't even take enough time to find out that you guys are returnless, rendering an FMU useless. Nothing was ever tested on a 2.2L Cobalt/Ion. It's a sham.

Thanks NJHK. I was hoping that you would get on here and set some things right. The whole setup seemed kinda fishy to me also. I think I will wait for the Hahn kit to come out, I need to save money anyways. I did, however, like that they were using a Garrett turbo. By the way man, I still have that click when i turn/brake...

first off, it's maximum boost .net, not .com... 2nd off, like already mentinoed it's a generic setup that is not fitted for/tested on a cobalt... i'd stay far away from that site... frank was banned from here for a reason...

Basically everyone is trying to say save your money. Maximum Boost is a company that buys most of their parts and pieces them together with little to no Research and Development at all. As Adam pointed out, we can't even use an FMU because of the returnless fuel system. The company says hey, we have a turbo, an intercooler... lets make it work.

I won't lie, you CAN by this kit and put it on your car... HOWEVER! *cough* there is still no tuning availble and without any fuel management, your going to run lean and muck your motor up.

Basically ... HP Tuners says they are working on it and will eventually get around to it. I don't mind because that gives me time to pay the car off first, but I know a lot of people are not so forgiving because they probably didn't have to finance the car.

*Hey Adam, remember when Maximum Boost tried to start a Group Buy on JBO? Haha they got flamed so fast it wasn't funny.

well after looking at the site it says the turbo is a T3...no trim label or anything....I think a t3 will have entirely too much boost lag for a motor that has 120hp to the wheels..and that we will still get owned by sssc...but throw in a t3/t4 which has harder boost in lower to mid powerband ranges and it will be a nice race..also the 2.2 have a but load of compression and you will need to lower it to atleast a 9.1 before you can really start raising boost and seeing nice numbers...i found a website last night that has forged rods and pistons the pistons were a 8.4:1 compression ratio and thats perfect for the 300 hp range which would be a very quick 13's-12's LS LT cobalt
