I doubt it, I've heard several people say this being dead serious. They act like it's boost kicking in or something. "He was pulling ahead of me until my vtec kicked in"... special ed...

didnt care to read the whole post so im sure someone has answered but i will again ..... your freind isnt the idiot you are ecotec is the engine name a v-tec is a controle module on the engine for instance a b18 c5 honda motor has v-tec but the engine is called b18 is the name of the engine the 2.2 ecotec is the name of the engine but the 2.4 ecotec with VVT would be gms v-tec
and yes you can feel the v-tec some is stronger than others
think of it like nitrous ranging from a 5 shot to about a 75 shot

I'd say it's more among the lines of you motor hitting it's peak torque.

Huh?

Vtec is something that is controlled through the stock PCM/ECM and is a physical operation with the valvetrain.

FYI: 2.2 = L61 and 2.4 = LE5

and no, the 2.4s Variable Valve Timing is NOTHING like Vtec. The 2.4 uses Cam Phasing technology.

The kicker to this post is that he has the nerve to call the guy a idiot when he's comparing a Variable Valve Timing setup and powerband to nitrous shots. ROFL.

On a serious note...

VTEC stands for "Variable valve Timing and Lift with Electronic Control" It works like stated before. At lower RPMs it gives increased gas milage with better high RPM power. Not a whole lot, but its there. Many things have to be correct for the system to work though. Engine temps, oil pressure and RPMs. At a pre-determined RPM (typically 5500) the system activates the VTEC solenoid which locks the valve rollers to a bigger lobe on the cam. On most twin cam engines (DOHC VTEC found on B16, B18, and H22 etc) this change-over is very noticable. I had a 1995 Honda Prelude that came stock with the H22 "big block" VTEC in it. A friend of mine had a 1994 Prelude that was an H23 non VTEC motor and made about 30 less horsepower but the same torque (about 156). From a dig we would race and stay door to door uintil my VTEC "kicked in" or the VTEC system activated and switched over to the bigger lobe. From that point on I would just pull away with a vengence. Its a good system. Recently VTEC has been made into a joke by "ricers" since most dont know what it is and refer to it as 'vtak" or misspell it as "v-tech" and complain that it "aint kickin in." A very common Honda "ricer" excuse.

The ECOtec name from the Gm poweplants is just a name. Ford had Zetec and now has Duratec. ECOtec was the name given to GM's global 4 cyl motor line. The LSJ, LE5 L61 and LNF are all ECOtec motos. It does not describe anything inside the motors technology or VVTI cam phasing setup.

The VVT-I system is the same technology as the Toyota tech and stands for Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence. And in NO WAY works the same as VTEC. VVTi uses cam phasing to adjust the cams for the best possible timing for power or fuel economy and the power increase that is felt is simply an enrichment of the A/F. The engine just pumps more fuel in. Sounds kind of like VTEC but as several different actuation points. Usually around 3500 and another closer to redline around 5000-6000.

I used to be a Honda VTEC guy and switched back to the lighter side of things with cars that make torque. But I will always be a wankel-man myself. Nothing beats the feel of a Wankel Rotary enigne. Boosted or NA!

Hope this helps!
