Valve Cover Air Breather

I've seen a couple cars with the mini air filter that attatches to the valve cover and I was wondering if it gives you any performance gains or is it just for looks. Also if you put one of the filters on what do you do to the port on the intake to block it off?

Sorrry if its a dumb question but any help would be appreciated

It does nothing at all except give you one more place to have to keep clean. My advice don't do it! Those things always wind up leaking oil.

Actually it does both ! The Positive Crankcase System (PCV) is similar to older cars' PCV systems in that it has a "PCV valve" (Its actually a calibrated orifice in the intake gasket) and breaths in air through the VC hose into the engine. Under acceleration or at high speed when the engine cylinders have increased blowby (normal to an extent for all cars) the pressure in the engine actually out flows the PCV orifice in the intake and air begins to flow from the VC into the intake -- where the fuel rich mixture is burned in the cylinder. If you only have a filter coming out of the VC then this fuel rich air mixture is just venting to the atmosphere -- not good for emissions reduction -- and technically you're giving away some MPG (very very minor amount to be honest). It just makes sense to keep a hose connected to the intake rather than use a filter -- but that's an owners decision....

all technical crap aside (sorry cobalter....nice post though) Ive had it on and off and honestly didn't notice it leaking oil, or did it affect my mileage or did it throw a CEL. So its up to you.

Bullshit.

When I had my custom intake made, I had them leave that nipple off the intake and put the filter on my valve cover. I don't consider myself a ricer. I guess I just have a problem with the blow-by **** being passed through my throttle body and charger. If you don't have a constructive opinion, then keep your mouth shut and grow up.

To the originator of this post. It's up to you. There are definately no performance gains from this. It's just a matter of opinion. Obviously GM engineered that for a reason. I just don't agree with GM engineers on everything.

Once again, grow up. Sorry I feel the need to correct your ignorant posts. And if you were just "messin around," then why are you the one coming right back at me like I hurt your internet ego. What are you, 12?

It does not throw a cel. I built my intake aug '06 and put a mini cone filter on the valve cover for the pcv. i've put about 20,000 kms on and no cel. Didn't even get one for the maf. heres a picture. Its a modified 2002 civic si intake

Well back on track now, another solution to this oil leakage is to plum in an oil catch can between the manifold and the intake tube, this is what I plan on doing just to catch any of that excess runoff, i know its not necessary but its precautionary and I need something to fill that huge empty gap from where the stock air box used to be haha

If you are running anything that causes intake manifold pressure, (like a forced air induction hood scoop or e-rams), you will lose pressure through the tube connecting the valve cover to the air intake unless you plug it off and install a filter.

This is what I did.

What was the code. because a maf code is not because of the filter on the valve cover. The only code you might get is a lean code but its highly unlikely because it cant draw enough air to even change the air fuel mixture. I stand by my last post. No pros or cons just up to the driver

Thanks for the answers everyone. I didn't think that they really made much of a difference but I you would install one what would you use to plug the opening on the intake?

I say its no big deal its just a filter it won't do anything reguardless.Blow-by gasses are vented through the intake manifold for emmission purposes it won't send any unmetered anything through your sensors.

Im actually not sure what the code was i didnt ask the guy but he told me i got it because of the breahter filter was on there, but then again when i first got there he asked me if it was an SS WTF he works for GM in the service section and he cant tell the difference, he said it was because i have a css.net sticker on the side window but come on, end or rant.
