Im in grad school and Im in a similar situation. Im buying a full exhaust (bout 200$) for now and working to get parts every few months. Save some of those greenbacks! On the other hand, my car is made for show more than "go". It is your life!

Try checking salvage yards for busted up cobalts too. You can find parts there for CHEEAP...i hear.

I heard it was bad to drive without a tune though when you put new parts on.

the tune is only "needed" when you do somehting like change injector size, change the tb, put stg2 cams in...etc

You can put all of the above on without a tune and it will run great. Tune should be the very last mod you do for your car performance wise. If you want, you could buy my parts, I'll sell them very cheap. You need an SS exhaust (which is 2.25", plenty for a NA cobalt)(~$150), SS exhaust manifold that's ported (which I also happen to have from my old days)(~$50), intake (you can find used for like 100 bucks on here), and 2.4 manifold swap (also a 100-150 deal on the classifieds), and a tune ($250).

So, all in all, you could get all bolt ons and a tune for about 700. I've got an SS exhaust that I'll be replacing soon for a 3" that I'll sell you, and I've got a ported SS header that's just as good as a honed extruded GMPP manifold that I'll sell for 50. The rest you can find in the classifieds for cheap.

Then you would have a little extra money left over and drop your car on some springs, would be sick.

x2

You don't have to tune when you install bolt ons.

If you're going to do a supercharger build for example, you'll probably be getting a lot of the stuff used. I got my injen intake used for only $125 shipped off a user from here, slapped on an AEM dryflow filter and it's good as new. Beats paying over $100 more for a new one.

Nothing wrong with used at all for a lot of parts.

I was just giving an example of something that would need a lot used parts to pull off.

A lot of used stuff will still be perfectly fine and will save you some money in the process.

Basically you have two options.

1. Just get a muffler for the sound and call it a day.
2. Get all of the above and a tune and be done with it.

If you replace the catback only and keep the stock header and downpipe you've only made it louder, not perform better. You'll get the same results if you upgrade with a header/dp combo and keep the stock catback, you'd be better off just getting a muffler. If you get an intake and tune, it's still going to be slow because you need a larger exhaust to get the most out of it. So honestly, it's not going to matter unless you really go all out.

You could get a tune I guess, that would render the most bang for your buck, but it's a waste doing that first without mods.

You'll still get a bit of performance from just doing a catback, but you're right with it not really making much of a difference.

It will take a lot to make the car remotely quick. I have the Sai system so a header at the moment. I'll get a LSJ downpipe and Tsudo catback for now. Maybe one day, I'll put a blower on it.

also, dont be afraid to pm somone about a price or an OBO priced item...they put that or best offer thing up there for a reason...pm them what you want to pay and you might work somethign out
