when to change the oil on a new car?

I just bought a 07 cobalt lt coupe which currently has 145 miles. When should I do the first oil change and then the following changes? Thanks. I thought I heard that I should do it after the first 500 miles.

that's an old school mentality with 'break in oil"

personally, i'd change it earlier than scheduled... maybe at like 2000 miles.

there should be no reason you would need to change before 3000.

I changed mine at around 2500 miles. Plan on doing it every 3000. Nowadays they say that you can get away with every 5,000 miles no problem, and my oil life gauge was still reading 55% when I got it changed over.

the correct answer is when the oil is worn out.

the engines come broken in so you could get by with going until the oil life gauge shows 0%. of course you don't want to do that. I changed mine at 1,000, again at 3,00 then every 4,000 after that. by no means do you need to do it that often, I wasn't paying for the oil so I figured why not.

its not a bad to change it early the first time, but its not necessary, just makes you feel a little better.
