Why Cat back ?
Probably a dumb question but whatever...
If the 2.2's have a 2.25 diameter exhaust what is the point of getting a 2.25" cat back system? wouldn't changing the resonator and muffler achieve the same goal ?

not positive as i have not seen a stock 2.2 exaust....but, the way they bend the pipe makes some difference...as in the madnrel bends flow better than the stock bends...

that post was really useless... sorry. but that has absolutely nothing to do with this post. This post is about the stock diameter of the exhaust not about how much potential the 2.2 has...

all of the cobalt exhausts are mandrel bent, and they are 2.5 inches except for the spot where it goes over the axle. All exhausts for the cobalt are going to be bent the same as there is only one path for it to travel under the car. You are correct, changing out the resonator & muffler would usually be the cheaper method of changing the exhaust. But sometimes it's just easier to buy a complete system, and your almost guaranteed to know what the car is going to sound like where if you go custom it could be hit and miss on the sound.

I did read that but if you read what i said about changing the muffler and the resonator then would it be less restrictive if the stocks are mandrel bent?
True about the sound being hit or miss... but if you go with a decent muffler and a longer resonator you should be guaranteed not to have a raspy exhaust and it should be decently deep should it not?

the sound would be fine but the bend at the axel drops to a 2.25....when you get rid of that bend then you have a 2.5 exhaust from the cat back...that 2.25 bend makes it essentially a 2.25 exhaust....elminate that restrictive bend....get a different downpipe since the downpipe has a bad bend as well and you'll have a smoother better sounding exhaust

You can see the differance between the stock exhaust and a true 2.25" inch exhaust (GMPP) when you look at them side by side. There is a big defferance. When I measure my stock exhaust it was 1.9" so not sure where many are getting 2.25" stock???
from the dp to the rear axel the piping is 2.25, after it bend upwards it turns into smaller 1.8-9 piping than tot he muffler than out the car...the SS's are the same, but they start with 2.5, than turn into 2.25
look at jason whitfields cobalt. 2.2L, revs to 10,500 rpm, and does the 1320 in 9 sec. thats not a 2.0, or 2.4, but a 2.2. granted theres a **** ton of stuff done to it, but still.
Downpipe and catalytic converter are your biggest killers beings your 2.25" downpipe drops down to right around 2" pipe, your stock exhaust is 2.25" but when it goes over your axle it drops down to 2" again.... (at least my 05 LS did!)
