darn plastic engine cover

is there a point to the cover? I popped it off the other day and the top of my engine is disgusting. so it doesn't keep the engine clean, what's it there for? looks? keeping sound down?
and is it ok for me to spray off the top of my motor to get all that dirt off?

It's there as a cosmetic piece. You should be fine spraying off your engine, just MAKE SURE IT ISN'T A HOT ENGINE. You'll **** it up. I noticed that my engine stays clean longer without the cover anyway.

My sister decided she wanted to wash her engine when she got home from a 8hr trip from college. Turned the garden hose onto it and FUCKED her engine.

Yep! Sold it(GEO hatchback) Then turned around and bought a Tercel with an out-of-state title that's had tons of structural problems. She rides in a 90s Lexus now.

so.. I'm definitely taking it off when my intake comes in. the bay looks odd with the factory intake and no cover.
