Engine swap

3 Attachment(s)
Hi, i have a 09 lap engine cobalt automatic and it been in a accident. The engine in it still has 60,000 miles and i was wondering what other car would go perfect with the swap? There a few pictures of the balt you can view... and is there any advice about what i shouldnt do, any tips would be helpful

Scrap it and start over. It's not that easy to swap these into other things.

Jrocky 02-29-2016 12:48 AM

what if i swap it with another cobalt ?

Jrocky 02-29-2016 02:14 AM

I got all the time in the world, so id like to know what needs to be done to swap the lap engine in L61 engine

The head and motor harness is different depending on what year l61.

Jrocky 02-29-2016 12:41 PM

Lets say a 07, like if i took the engine out of the L61 car and then took the Lap engine out of the other one, what things would i have to change in the car?

Jrocky 02-29-2016 04:16 PM

or do you think i should buy a cobalt and take everything out of it and put everything in my cobalt in that. I'm talking about rewiring it

You'd have to swap the entire harness/PCM, then try to get it to play nice with the BCM and the rest of the network. It's possible, but not worth it IMO for a base model auto car. In good shape the car is only worth a couple grand, so you're gonna buy a broken one, then spend hundreds of hours swapping everything, to end up with another base model car?

whats wrong with having a base model car?

OP its pretty easy to do in an 07+ l61 car if you have hptuners

i have an l61 car, swapped in an 07 le5, used a 10 lap engine harness, and am running an 08 LE5 tune on the stock ecu.

anything is possible

Value/time issue, nothing wrong with the car itself. If you value your labor hours at zero then anything is worth doing. Personal choice.

Says the guy with a turbo toyota tercel

I get what you mean though. Depends on what you wanna do with it.

Jrocky 03-01-2016 04:18 PM

All the hours im going to be putting into this is nothing for me atm, I'm currently on EI atm so i got plenty of time until i goes back to work. Me and my father would be worth on this together so he'd will give me a hand with all of it. lets say i bought this car Cobalt for parts $400 ono | used cars & trucks | St. John's | Kijiji and i took everything out of the lap and put it into this white cobalt, like i mean everything the guts and all, would it be possible?

Slowbalt2000 03-01-2016 04:20 PM

yes its possible

Jrocky 03-01-2016 04:21 PM

or maybe this car? 2005 cobalt | used cars & trucks | St. John's | Kijiji

Jrocky 03-01-2016 04:25 PM

yea im just going to gut both cars and take everything from the lap and put it into the other one?

Bought that car already swapped and boosted, for 2K, and it's faster than a bolted LSJ. I don't see the problem there. :guns:

To turbo a lsj it's just a few bolts also.

Yes sir, Harnesses, computers and all.

Jrocky 03-01-2016 07:52 PM

Great, can't wait to start this project. I'm going to be starting at the end of march, ill keep posting picture of the build.

thats not really necessary...

I left all of my internal body wiring alone. There are a couple connectors you have to repin but thats not hard at all. All 07-10 base models use the same ecu. Since you already have the ecu you need, you would probably only need to do a VATS(vehicle antitheft system) delete and the car would start right up.

So your saying all i would have to do is take the engine out and put the other engine in, switch ECU's and hook up all the harness's and deleted the VATS and it would start?

Theoretically, yes because it's the same ECU and basic setup.

Slowbalt2000 03-02-2016 01:01 AM

Yes, that exactly what i did.

There is one connector that goes between the two big ecu connectors and that will have to be repinned, but its pretty simple. once you get there i can get you the diagrams

Could you get me the diagrams now for future purposes and what about the vvt on the lap, do i just got to hook up the extra harness and put it the ecu?
