well yesterday i was driving home from a buddies place my car decides to start running on 3 cylinders.... im throwing the p0301 code and was having over 150 misfires per cycle... well i limped her home and let her sit for over night, this morning i fired her up again to see if it was still running like shit, and she still sounded like a suby. i checked the compression and spark plugs and found maybe 5psi in cylinder one and my spark plug was fucked
Attachment 55492
now i was thinking about rebuilding my engine to handle more power because i am a 2.2 LAP supercharged with a stage 2 pulley, cai, 42# injectors, step colder NGK plugs... but i dont know what i would need to do, and where to get everything... what should i do? should i rebuild the engine, or just buy a "new" engine and stick it in with the sc set up and wait for it to happen again?? what parts would i need, and what would i be roughly looking at to spend to rebuild? any input is appreciated! thanks

BankerBalt 09-03-2012 06:31 PM

well here's the thing. if it happens once, it'll probably happen again. if you can't afford the rebuild, then i suggest putting in another engine, larger pulley and moderate timing. if you can afford the rebuild, i can make up a parts list for you, i just rebuilt mine over the past couple months..

BankerBalt 09-03-2012 06:32 PM

also... downside to blowing your engine rather than building it up before it blows... could be more problems than just that spark plug blowing... i blew my engine before i rebuilt it and i screwed up a few things unfortunately

c1_c1rca 09-03-2012 06:47 PM

lol thanks, if u could get me a parts list that would be awesome, i was panning on building it up before it blew.... but its to late now, ill see what i can afford when i no whats going to cost what, and it looks like i can take off my insurance and start taking the hour long bus ride to work tomorrow........ yay

turbosmart4 09-03-2012 06:49 PM

Search for the subaru mod...

BankerBalt 09-03-2012 06:50 PM

give me an hour or so to make a beer run and get some part numbers for you

c1_c1rca 09-03-2012 07:02 PM

lol thanks man... have a beer for me to, fuck i could sure go for one right now

BankerBalt 09-03-2012 07:30 PM

so this is going off the idea that your block/sleeves/head is fine and a full overhaul... i suggest googling all of the part numbers to get the cheapest prices

--wiseco pistons/eagle rod combo - 799/obo through ebay. stock compression 10:1 and bore 86mm
--clevite rod bearings - 5.46/piece, 4 needed CB1827AL through rock auto. standard size
--arp head studs - 120-160, same for all ecotecs ARP231-4701
--cometic mls head gasket - 90-100 COMC5768-040
--camshaft timing set - 100-120 94201S cloyes
--balance shaft timing set - 100-120 94202S cloyes
--gm crank pulley bolt - 4-7, 11589123
--front cover gasket (comes with front main seal) - 18305-07058296
(below are only if you spun bearings somehow and need to remove the crank)
--gm main girdle bolts - 3.25 +/- a piece, 20 needed 11571239
--gm outside girdle bolts - 6.14 +/- a piece, 10 needed 11588733
--gm main bearings - 20-30/set, 12591092 all 2.0,2.2,2.4 share the same main bearings

now if you're looking at putting zzp balance shafts in, add those to the list. if you're looking at building the head to be bulletproof, let me know and i'll get you a list for that too

This is very funny lol not really but three weeks ago i had the same thing happen pulled the plug from the #1 cyl and found the same thing. The piston actually started to come apart and threw a piece of the ring up into the cyl which was bouncing off the plug. Pulled the plug and got the metal out and it actually ran ok. I am in the process of having the motor built bullet proof since this happen.

BankerBalt 09-03-2012 08:01 PM

i probably should've told you to replace the plug at first just because this actually happened to me too...wasn't really thinking. when i blew my motor, 3 of my pistons had chunks taken out of the top haha

c1_c1rca 09-03-2012 08:02 PM

i want it to be bullet proof.... but i want it to be able to get me to work first and running properly, so im going to do that first then build the fuck out of it

i changed the plug and still sounded like a harley. stuck a magnet down in the cyl pulled out metal like a cotter pin. put a new plug in ran like a dream, honest to god lost no power at all and come to find out when we tore the engine apart that i was missing a 1/4 of the top of the piston

c1_c1rca 09-03-2012 08:06 PM

for the wiseco pistons/eagle rod combo i found a set on ebay, but its the 8.9-1 compression and 86.5mm
would those work? ive heard of people doing it but would i have to mod anything? and what would be the bennifits of the different compression?

klutch814 09-03-2012 08:07 PM

holy shit...more fears lol. im turning the boost down tommrrow. i already started buying forged parts lol

i need to borrow me a magnet.... lol

klutch814 09-03-2012 08:08 PM

higher compression is good for na build lower the compression is best for boost

BankerBalt 09-03-2012 08:13 PM

Wiseco Pistons Eagle Rods Ecotec 2.2L 10.0:1 86mm | eBay

that's the one i bought

keep in mind that you'll need a tune before you attempt to start your car if you go lower compression. i kept stock compression and i'm probably a little higher than 10:1 because i had to have my head shaved down a smidge

c1_c1rca 09-03-2012 08:13 PM

so the 8.9 would be better.. dope what about the .5mm difference in diameter?

Coby The Killer 09-03-2012 08:14 PM

you can borrow it anytime lol
if you get a hold of jeff( mongorat427 ) on here he can help you with getting parts. He is the one who is helping me with getting everything i need. Im sure he is up for making money if you are willing to spend. I mean if you are just trying to get it going again building it up sure isnt the route to take. But i see it that it is broke now i should just do it right now and do it the right way

you are going to have to have the engine bore'd to run a bigger piston

you are going to have to see what all damage you have. if it fucked the head up and stuff you are shit out of luck for a quick cheap fix

BankerBalt 09-03-2012 08:19 PM

well to be honest, if you want a smaller compression, you CAN get it. it will be fine, you'll just need AFR's and timing tweaked when you get ready to run it. keep in mind, even with my same set up, i had to get a retune before i moved my car at all

believe it or not i was lucky as hell and had no damage to mine

klutch814 09-03-2012 08:24 PM

just take a loan and build that shit right. if you know somewhat about these cars you can have it done pretty fast.
