2.4 S/C Tranny Aftermath

all i can say is, if you're looking into supercharging or turbocharging your 2.4 5 speed, you better make sure you've ordered a clutch before you install it. If you wait till after you'll probably end up needing to replace the flywheel aswell lol.

Here's some pics from months ago, just never got around to posting them

Pressure Plate (Heat warpage):

Clutch Side One (pulled out a good handful of clutch dust with the swap):

Clutch Side Two:

Flywheel (heat warpage):

Tranny(2nd and 3rd gear sychro's toast):

This is exactly why when people say "why don't you boost your car" I tell them im not interested. My car is my daily driver, and I don't have time for downtime. If you have a 2nd car to drive, then def, go big. But theres trial and error with these kind of things, and I just can't risk the "error" part of that scenario. Good luck man, hope everything works out!

Yeah. I have "crazier" plans so to speak when I pay it off. B/c when I pay it off, i'll be able to afford another car. But for now, I gotta be sensible.

x2
The manual in the SS/NA is only rated up to 180hp I think. The automatic is the same one used in the v6 Chevy applications, rated up to 300hp, but can easily handle 400hp.

THere are plenty of F23 300+hp cars out there.

Just when you buy a SC or TK get a clutch/flywheel and a new pressure plate too that's all...

If the syncros are gone, that's not a blown tranny so it could be rebuilt. That's really not that bad. It's when you destroy third gear and send the fragments of through the case like I did is when it's bad. Glad to hear it's all back together though.

Damn, so there are SS / SS/SC Cobalts in SC, lol. I've been down to visit my parents in their new house 3 times now since they moved in Jan '07, and I've yet to see an SS or SS/SC model Cobalt down there. Modded sport compact down there in general are extremely sparse. Def not like up here where the tuner scene is booming. Everything down there is "Donk", lol. But yeah, my parents live on "Ladies Island", which is in Beaufort. Love it down there. Probally coming down this spring when my girlfriend goes on spring break.

the auto tranny is rated a 350tq. the manual tranny is rated at about 1
70tq. from what i hear the internals on the manual are supposed to withstand 300+tq pretty easily. but i guess my old tranny was a peice of ****.

this is my daily driver and i have not had any real downtime on it. only takes me five hours to drop the motor and remove the tranny and get it all put back together. supercharger install took me a weekend, and tuning about a day. And i by all means did not have the right tools haha. the only thing i had was a 85 piece craftsman toolset, some jackstands and a jack haha. Its amazing what you can do with a little bit of determination.

yeah i just bought another tranny cuz i found one for 400 locally. if i end up needed to replace this one i'll just rebuild the other one that's off the car and then swap em.
