The 2.4 SS Auto Tranny Thread

Hey guys.

Just outa curiosity, I'm looking at seeing just how many people got their SS n/a with auto. I didn't really want to, but was sorta forced to. Long story. Regardless, just post up if you do.

Also, how do you shift? Are you just a "drop it into D and go" sorta guy, or do you actually "shift"?

Plus, What's the story with that L, I, and D? Obviously in L, it's just 1st gear...and it won't shift until you do so. But what's the I? Intermediate, I know. But will that still use all 4 gears or is that only like 1-2, or what? I never really wanted to fool around with it, then jack up my transmission. I don't really like autos too much, but i like keeping it in the lower gear to get the SS tuned exhaust pitch.

For me though, as below, I have a 2006 Cobalt SS with auto. Black. woo! lol.

I have noticed though, at redlights, if you put it into 1st, floor it all the way through redline, then shift into I, redline, then up to D that it goes really quick. Like...really quick. So I wonder how much different the 0-60 times and stuff would be under different shifting conditions. Because from driving mine like that, I don't see how it can get as high of times as it does. I love this things low and mid range.

But I need the info on that damn Intermediate gear...

I have the auto trans. in my cobalt ss 2.4 and i rarely use the "I" and "L" gear....I like driving in "D"
I would only use "I" and "L" in the winter ONLY when there's alot of snow

There have been a couple of threads about this already.... so here's a synopsis.

For every day driving... leave it in D

If you want the traction control off for some extra help on the street or track.... that's what L is for... to get ya goin.

The I is for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd... holds them all the way to redline and then shifts hard to the next... also allows engine brakeing, but I don't see much use for it in this car.

You can shift it manually of course... but it's hard on the tranny and if you do it all the time it could cause problems down the road.

Hope that answers your questions!

Perfect.

I rarely ever actually "shift". If I do, it's only ever upshifting. I never downshift becasue I know that's even harder on it. But mine's a lease. So..........

But thanks for the info!!

i am interested to see the best ways to get good times so this spring when the track opens im gonna test some different ways to see whats fastest we will know this spring but most likely torque breaking in L then shifting to I then to drive or it could be possible to finish the 1/4 mile in I as well , and im not sure if the torque breaking will help or not since we spin without doing it but we will see

I have ran my 2.4 auto SS at the track several times this past fall. my first time i just left it in "D" and floored it.....traction kicked in and I ended up getting a 16.3.........wasn't impressed as my last base cobalt ran a 16.5....so being that this was time to experiment i dropped it into "L" to shut off traction control and my time ended up dropping to 15.91 at 84mph.....more experimenting to come this spring especially since i just dropped in a k&n

there is no doubt in my mind that you will be able to run in the low 15's......my friend is running a 15.2 with just a cold air intake but his is also a stick

I bought Auto (2.4L). Bum left knee and my wife can't drive manual. I will drive in D unless I is required for winter conditions.

those are some awesome times for an auto 4 cyl, chevy did a great job on this engine and matching the tranny although a 5 speed would have been nice auto of course

"D" is fine for me. Drove a stick for a while and am tired of shifting. Maybe when lease is done I will go for a manual.

I'll certianly have to agree with you. My first jaunt into the world of car ownership was a 93 Honda Accord. It was a 2.2 with a stick. I wanted a stick. I loved it. I modded it a bit and loved it. Eventually after a winter with the car, it was kinda crappy. It obviously lost some of the initial fun-factor. It happens. But the snow made it a real pain in the ass. Then after that car, I bought my old Cadillac. 89 Deville. It was cool. The engine didn't like me though. All of the old aluminum 4 liter V8's didin't like anyone though. But as I figured, the auto was more boring than before. but it was a luxury car...so it didn't matter. Then I used my dads 04 Monte SS for awhile and he used the Cadillac. The Hydramatic in the Monte is nice. It bogs very little. But when I bought a new car, I vowed to never vuy an auto 4 cylinder. however, after one spin in the Cobalt I knew I changed my mind. To make a long story, short though, I had to buy an auto. Many reasons. But after being a valet, I know the horrid automatic experiences. I'm glad the actually put some thought into this car though. I was very impressed with the engine and tranny combination. Props to GM on this car.
