2.4 tranny weak???
I was browsing around GM Powertrain website looking for info on the 2.4 and it's tranny. It seems that anyone who builds up the engine more than just bolt-ons will have no choice but to beef up the tranny to keep it from failing under the extra power.
Not surprising, GM did this to us with the Cavy Z24, Sunfire GT as well.
The tranny from the SS/SC is already beefed up accoring to the specs.

Here's the spec sheet for the manual. It has been years since I've been involved in this but if I remember correctly, the gearbox torque is the maximum we can put to it.

We are right at the limit for the power rating of the getrag trans. Now almost everything GM makes under goes very rigorous durability tests for a few hundred thosand miles.
Increased power won't kill a Getrag---at least not right away.

This is nothihng new for GM. The Borg-Warner T-5 was maxed out at 305lbs-ft. And the 305 TPI made up to 300lbs-ft. Also GM had an over the counter SLP package (headers, exhaust CAI, chip)--and it was warranited.

Also nice to know that the automatic can take some more power.... so much for you "auto is for pussies" boys.... heheheh....
325 lb-ft baby!

auto is for pus... oh **** never mind. Anyway, just to let you guys know I got my car on the track tonight and I took an SS.SC out there also... Wooooow my clutch is really giving up... The SS/SC, actually both of them I took out, were at 2k miles mine was at 5600. Dood I can't even feel my clutch in comparison. Am I missing someting or do I just need to buy a new clutch and buy a second car ?

Anyone who plans to "Boost" an automatic should really invest in an ATX Cooler and a ATX Tamp sensor from Autometer..
Also, it will work well for some time, but it will fail much sooner than if the engine was stock.
Save up for a tranny..

I dunno about ALL the ecotec autos, but the maps on my 2.2 Alero will actually reduce line pressure and have abuse maps for the transmission if the fluid temp gets too hot.
So the computer will help you from killing it as well.
The stock trannie should have a temp sensor probably just requires a gauge to display it.
Also keeping the trannie cooler with an ATX cooler will avoid you from hitting the abuse mode in the computer

You can just install a line tap on the Cooler input line and add a $100.00 Autometer ATX Temp..
The Sesnor is included and then you don't have to mess around with any of the stock wiring..

I have trouble with that number. Maximum gear box torque? What does that mean?
Look at GMs new 6 speed FWD trans. They must be quoting maximum engine torque...because they are rated at 280lbs-ft and a slightly different version is rated at 300lbs-ft. It quotes thta numbers in all the press releases and not gearbox torque--perhaps because it is a largely irrelevant number...........?

A newer trans by at least 10 years s not as strong? Doesn't make sense.
Heres a link to GMs 4 speed 4T-64E. Now if the 4T45 is so strong...why not use that behind the 323lbs-ft of the Impalas LS4 V8. Because its not.
