only facts about it, is that it won't be released until spring time 2005.

I don't know when they are going to start producing them though...although i've heard they had problems with the 2.4 and thats why they haven't released them yet

^^^sorry that wasn't all factual....but it'll give you a better idea

you get a different answer from everyone you ask, but the latest rumor is GM is trying to squeeze another 10 horses out of it.

Man..after being on this site for a few days, I didn't even know they were offering the SS in a 2.4 trim. :? Unless they're gonna have an SS Sedan?

The SS in 2.4 (naturally aspirated) trim was the pearly Blue Cobalt that was at all of the shows. It's in the pictures thread in the lounge. The 2.4L is supposed to have VVT and put out 170hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. Sounds pretty good to me for the second-best model.

Its unclear at this point if they will have an NA SS and then a S/C SS.
That was the plan originally but that may have changed.

SS might be reserved for the 2.0 S/C only.

Seeing as how GM got 190hp (W41, most were 180--then 175hp) out of a much 2.3 HO Qaud 4 over a decade ago, I would hope they are gonna get the 2.4L VVT to make 180hp.

Now the Quad 4 HO was much peakier, high rpm engine AND less advanced.

The 2.4L VVT will no doubt be smoother, cleaner and have a wider powerband, probably with alot more bottom end. Should run with the best.

i want hte 2.4.. and i'm sure it will come with 5 speed, eventhough people swear itll only be auto. The downside is.. the tranny won't be geared for the engines powerband...

I am with you--2.4L 5 speed for me (unless I could swing the S/C....)
Don't think the trans won't be geared for the engines powerband just yet.

As we don't know the gears ratios, axle ratio or even the powerband.
I am sure it will be pretty good.

It is (or was) gonna be offered as a Cobalt SS (2.4 L), in BOTH coupe and sedan models. Can't get a straight answer out of GM or Chevy on this issue, I have tried many times. Who knows for sure?

Yeah, that would be cool, I own a 93 Beretta GTZ with the 2.3 HO Quad 4 and its a great car, reving up to ~7000 RPM, no problem. 8) I hope this engine (the 2.4 VVT) does make production and that they equip it with a 5-speed manual.

So basically it's the base model, with a bigger engine and the body kit of the S/C on it? How much will this thing probably run? I have an issue of i think Super Street or Sport Compact Car from like. . .August or something and it has a full preview of the line of Cobalts, and it says something about like 17,500 or 18000 for the SS. I must know, because personally, 145hp isnt enough for me

It will not have the bodykit of the s/c SS. It will have a "Sports Appearance Package"

Any word of if the 170 horse version is getting new rods and pistons like the SS SC? I figure the 145 horse isnt bad, just throw full instake / exaust on it and ull be pushin 170 or so.

I already had my 2.4 ordered. You can only get the 2.4 on special order right now. Not many people know about it. I went to the dealership and they only have 4 people signed up for it and thats including me. So I suggest to anyone that wants a 2.4 go to ur dealership and reserve urs a.s.a.p.... There gonna sell like hot-cakes..
The insurance will be much lower than the supercharged ss.

Not to call BS on you, but dealers here don’t even know about the 2.4L SS!
Is there any way you can show us proof of your order? If not, can you post the number for your dealer? I would like to talk to them

Im wondering if there gonna come out with a turbo for the 2.4..... I mean look at the mitsu evo. You pull up next to one of them youll probly get spanked.

The cobalt sounds sweet and all but the rpm limit of 6500 and comparing to every car i see it has less torque and horse than anything. The rsx- type s has 210hp..

The nisson 350z has like over 300hp for the same price of the rs evo..

i dont wanna pull up next to a evo n get smoked in a cobalt.

I dont know what to get anymore.. lol Its a hard choice..
Even if you can take ur 2.4 170hp cobalt n' pop a turbo on there maybe puttin u at lets say 250-260hp youll need the money to do it.. and youll prob still get eaten by the evo.

so im stumped... I thinks its too early to even talk bout the cobalt. who knows what will come up next. The Pontiac G6 has 200hp and it sure dont feel like it.

Maybe they will.

But look at what your comparing: an EVO and a 350Z? Way out of a Cobalts 2.4L price range and not natural competitors at all.
Doesn't make any sense...I mean a Mustang GT will smoke a Cobalt SS too but that doesn't really matter.

Haha a Mustang GT (NEW) might, but as for most on the road these days they wouldnt have much chance, underpowered and too heavy. As for the new ones rolling with 300 horse or so, I think they could do some damage

As for comparing the EVO and 350Z i agree, the cobalt is at a whole other level (direct competition with the SRT-4 and RSX-S) in price and power.

thats thats true... i mean.. everyone wants to be able to afford something like an evo.
The cobalts has like 30more lbs of torque than the rsx so i dont think the rsx really has that much of a chance off the line.. althought it does have 15 more hp. these days hp isnt that big of a deal as long as its around the competitors range...

you can probly get a chip for the cobalt and bump it up.

and i heard somethin about being able to put a turbo with the supercharged ss.. it that even possible?

and mustangs are to over rated.. if i won one of em id prob sell it and get an evo. lol

auto

I'd rather have an auto anyway. If you bracket race you don't want a manual trans. unless it is made for drag racing, better shifter and clutch too.

alright guys calm down. An evo has AWD and a cobalt has FWD. Never compare AWD to FWD. With AWD you have beter cornering and take off, just think AWD burn outs. thats hella fast take off! with the cobalt though it will probably be faster in the 3-4th gear pull away, if it can keep up with an evo. and a cobalt will oversteer. plus look at the price difference, at least 10g in price. In my opinion, the AWD should stay in rally races and FWD sould stay on road.
I too want a 2.4 SS!
yeah dealers dont even know about the 2.4. Sounds like we all have the inside info!
