Boost Questions For A Boost Noob..

Hey guys,

I was just kinda briefly considering looking into boost somewhere down the line. I'm more of a turbo guy, but I'm sure supercharging would be cheaper since there are more blowers readily available for these cars.. So lets' see.. Here's a few basic questions..

1. What options are available? In terms of pre-made kits or LSJ take-offs..

2. What kind of price ranges are you looking at for just the pieces, then for after it's all installed and tuned?

3. What are some good supporting mods to do? I'd figure it'd be modifying the cooling system and exhaust extensively.. I'm auto, so maybe boosting the drivetrain a bit too..

I'm sure there are posts in relation to different aspects of this thread, but since i'm new to boost, I figured it'd be easier to just gather all the info in one place..

It's just that my friend has a CRX and is boosting his B16 this summer. He can already beat me (I'm very lightly modded and he's extensively modified), and after he goes turbo it'll be all over. My other friend has a turbo'd GSR Integra with over 350 dyno hp to the wheels. Yeah.. It's fun.

So thanks in advance..

To my knowledge there are currently no off-the-shelf supercharger systems for the 2.4.

Your best bet would be to search through Becks threads he has posted tons of info, and heven a how-to, on supercharging his 2.4

Word. So for turbo, there's kits. But for s/c you'd just piece together some pats from the LSJ to get it? Basically? haha

i believe rebelautoworx makes a 2.4l supercharger kit that includes all of the parts needed except the M62 and intake manifold, both of which can be bought on the forum. Then theres the Hahn/Garret turbo kit if you want to go turbo.

the problem is tuning the 2.4, it's tough. the turbo kits usually have that problem solved, but the s/c is a DIY i believe?

You're a turbo guy. Make it easy on yourself and look up Hahn Racecraft. You'll get more power, they make good stuff, and as stated, the tuning is easier.

Kinda thought it was like 5g's.. It's a good deal of money, but if it runs anything like the factory turbo Saabs (which i'm sure it'd be just like it), it'd be great in daily driving..

Just don't expect a turbo cobalt to take on a Saab. Ive seen Saabs mop the pavement with civic ricers, and I'm sure theyd do the same to turbo'd cobalts, unless you modify the crap out of the engine.

whats so great about a turbo saab? With my upcoming 300whp id love to kill one. on dragtimes.com there are only 9 saabs that are faster than my current 1/4 mile best time.

I've driven alot of turbo Saabs (not the old gay ones keep in mind, but the pretty new ones), and they have a great turbo feel to them. The spool sound great, and the acceleration is very very nice. Grantid, if I wanted a torque monster I wouldn't be driving a Cobalt. haha

Yeah but modded vs. stock are different things (what kind of boost do stock Saab's run?). Sure, even if theyv'e done some mods and their still slower by a bit, the car has better design, better suspension, better stock tuning etc etc. Just because you beat one in the 1/4 mile dosn't mean your going to take it in the turns.

In all reality, the 2.4 cobalt is probably the best car to tune off of (mainly from the VVT). (4banger wise)

My 302whp can beat stockish Z06's, annihilate stock/modified SRT4s, EVO's, STi's.

The fact that 90% of our torque is given at low rpm's is..great.

What about actually swapping a full LSJ drivetrain? Engine, tranny, ecu? I'm sure it'd cost the same if not more than just adding a turbo setup to the 2.4 and probably actualy be slower, correct? I have no problems with an s/c on the 2.4 though.. Would the s/c be alot cheaper to piece together than the turbo kit it's self?

I sure hope you dont mean the Z06 as in the Vette Z06. If so please post a video because my dad has a z06 vette and i know sure as **** what that 500whp feels like and what my 300whp feels like.

An option to consider is a take-off supercharger system delete from someone doing one of our TurboSystems. It includes so much:
  • Supercharger
  • Intake manifold/intercooler
  • Intercooler coolant pump, hoses, heat exchanger
  • Belt drive system
You'd pick one up for a good deal, bolt it all on, then HPTuners, some 60's, and our BoostFueler return system and you'd be good to go! As the 2.4 is a larger engine, boost pressure vs. pulley size would be a bit lower...but you've still got the ability to play the pullies card too for more power.

You shouldn't be paying anything more than these prices if you go s/c:

sc with stock pulley <$450
IM (make sure you get the brace at the bottom)<$150
42lb inj. <$150 (used)
stage 2 belt ~$40?
surge tank setup $125 (there are many ways to rig something up cheaper)
cobra HE ~$100
Install ~1200
Tune ~200

Those are you major parts. You also need a 2.0 airbox/intake system or 2.0 aftermarket intake. 2.4 throttle can be reused. alternator spins backwards with no adverse effects.

Im not sure where your pulling the 500whp figure from, as they are only 505bhp, but most dynos state that they are at around 435whp.

And also not that far off in weight compared to a Cobalt Sedan.

You are correct sir.

However, i didnt claim to beat one...just stated I kept up with one.

from a 45-110 roll, i was by at most a car length behind.

Im still in serious doubt that it only had a car length on you and if its true i would love to see some kind of video or something cuase that would be very impressive. Ive never "raced" my dad in his vette but this may lead me to ask if he wants to go for a quick run if its true lol. However he has a KN intake and custom exhaust on it so he got some big gains from those simple mods.
