Question Cat-Back vs. High Flow Mufflers

What are your thoughts on cat-back exhaust vs. just a high fow muffler. I was going to put a 60 series flow master on my SS using the stock piping and I am now trying to figure out if spending an extra $500 or so on cat-back would be worth it in power gains.

its worth it, especially if you ever plan on forced induction

What size piping would you recommend. Also, I am not wanting to make my car sound like a bumble bee. I want a low rumble- this is why I was looking at the Flowmaster 60 series. If I go with Cat-back, will it be really loud and high-pitch.

well since parts of the 2.4 exhaust are 2.5 inch stay with 2.5 inch the whole way thru. i would highly reccamend corsa touring if you want a stock like sound with all the added benefits of the cat back exhaust, it s really quiet, also if cost is and issue get the magnaflow or monza which are both 2.5 inch and add an extra resonator on them to keep the sound down

I'll give you my personal experience.

My first car: 1993 Honda Accord EX coupe, 5 speed. It was the EX model, and it then had the 2.5 tubing and high flow header. When I got it it already had a Bosal (stock looking aftermarket exhaust) muffler on it. So I never really felt it "stock". I then replaced it with a Ractive 3 inch Fireball universal muffler. The thing had a sweet idle, alright low-end, nice midrange, and AMAZING high-end.

*I'll add more when I get home*

Magnaflow is cheap and sounds great. I recommend it. 2.5 inch piping. Bought it for $481 shipped.

yeah if you go for the 2.2 or 2.4 magnaflow they will give you 2.25 inch, make sure you go for the SS 2.0 exhaust which is 2.5 inch

I recommend= go the a muffler shop tell them you want either borla, magnaflow whatever floats your boat. Then tell them you want 2.5in. piping and they will do it for you, and it will probably cost you about 200 bucks less then a complete kit from catalogs.

Did you get the complete system or just the muffler?

BWAHAHA!!!

I got my exhaust done on my Monte. I had them throw Dynomax Super-Turbos on in place of the stockers. It cost me less than 200 including the mufflers. There were 2. That was at Minekie. lol. At a REAL shop it'd probably be slightly more for something like that. The Super-Turbo sounds almost stock. It's great. If you want to be loud however, go with something else...

This may be a stupid question, but I will ask anyway. Does a cat-back exhaust system come with a high flow catalytic converter? Is this the real difference between cat-back systems and plain old high flow mufflers?

So would adding a random technology catalytic converter add additional power?

if its a high flow converter 2.5 inch then yeah it may add 1 or 2 hp nothing great but a good upgrade if you plan on going forced induction later

I went to Flowmaster's website and I found that the 60 series muffler would be the best fit for what I am looking for. They want to charge me $179 just for the muffler. I am thinking that I should just go with a magnaflow muffler ( for around $70). This shop also does mandrel bends. So I could save a few hundred dollars on my exhaust sytem by doing it this way instead of buying a complete system like corsa. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

By the way, if I have them run new piping should I go with 2.25" or 2/5"?
