Cavalier vs Cobalt
Cavalier vs Cobalt
My friend has a stock 2002 manual cavalier and he swears that his car will beat my auto cobalt ss/na just because of his manual tranny over my auto. I don't think thats true at all. I guess I'll have to race him to find out. What do you guys think?
well he might have the launch, but as soon as he hits third, u will pull on him mad hard. auto launches aren't that great compared to manual, but deff the 2.4 has a higher top speed and will be quicker in higher gears. i have a manual 2.2 n i keep up with my friend who has a manual 2.4 z24. soooo idk, all based on driver.
If it was a base eco 5-speed it'd be a drivers race since they are fairly light compared to our pigs. If he gets a good launch and doesn't miss a shift i wouldn't be surprissed either way.
That depends if you're talking about a 2.2 ecotec or 2.4 L4. I had an 02 Z24 and I was able to bull on the ss 2.4 all the time with a couple bolt ons. My last dyno with it was 177whp. If the balt is stock you're not getting all 173 to the wheels. RPM's the balt got it! So, it would be a good race slow but good
You are gonna win, unless he has a good amount of work done. The 2.2 cavys are nice and do have some decent power but, they are a 16 second 1/4 mile car, where as the Cobey 2.4 is a 15 second car.
First of all, it's a 2002...
There were 3 engines available for that year
A 2200 OHV engine, 2.4 Twin Cam (LD9) and the 2.2 ECOTEC (L61), which one is it?
And it might be a closer race than you think depending on the engine he has.
Actually...
2.2 ECOTEC Cavaliers (manual) are good mid 15 second cars. I have many of friends who were stock 1/4 mile wise running 15.3-15.4 as well.
They have similar limiters (it's either 6500 or 6800 RPMs for the j-bodies).

I'm sorry to say this, but I will have to doubt that a 2.2 Cavy will pull a 15.3-15.4 out the box with no mods. The late 90's Cavy's with the 2.4 Twin Cam's were besting 15.9's. Not to mention, the 2.4 is a very strong motor, but I don't believe ever hearing that an 02 Cavy with a 2.4 was pulling high 14's, which it should if the 2.2 was running mid to low 15's..Show me some proof that them cars where stock and I will retract my previous statement.

I can believe that you beat a vert cavy, but if you raced an i/h/e eco cavy he would win. Think about it, the same power, but like 300 lbs less weight.
my last car was a 2004 cavi, base 5 speed, 2.2 ecotec, with I/E/H and it wouldnt come close to our STOCK 2.4 auto sedan, i ran 15.7-15.9 in the cavi with all mods, and i have driven manuals since i learned how to drive. we raced them the night we got our cobalt, and i got owned, plus her old car was a 2002 2.2 ecotec auto cavi that we traded for the balt, it wasnt even close to my cavi. COBALT FTW. Just take off in L and shift to I
My stock 02 Z24 2.4 LD9 5speed went 15.2 @92 mph. It was a 50 degree's night at 918ft above sea level. All it had was a catback and a K&N . It might be closer than you would think .
