Custom Exhaust Work

I had some custom exhaust work done tonight on my 2.4L SS. Had it done by a local shop... (http://www.1st-try.com). It's an automatic with the Injen CAI being the only other performance mod.

Since the stock exhaust is 2.5" until the rear axel, I had them cut the exhaust before it drops in diameter and weld in some mandrel bent 2.5" piping over the axel. I used a "twin loop" muffler. Yes... a twin loop muffler. The inlet comes in at 2.5" and passes straight through to a 2.5" outlet.... then loops back around to pass straight through at 2.5" again to the second outlet. Then that outlet flares into a nice polished tip.

I'll update this with pictures tomorrow, but for now I'll post two videos: one parked and one driveby.

I'm pleased with the result. The sound is deep. Not quite as deep ast the GMPP exhaust, but still not bad. It doesn't really pop at all. There's a decent gurgle. You actually hear the intake more in the car still. On a driveby, you can hear all intake until the car passes you... then you hear some exhaust.

Take a peek for yourself:

Sound Clip, parked and reving (thanks to WSFrazier for pulling this sound from a messed up vid):

Here is a sound clip to listen to while streetfire finishes his videos. I compressed it as much as I could without losing quality. Sorry if it sounds like **** Dan. :/

Interesting. I hadn't heard of a "twin loop" muffler. I would think you would want to have the least amount of bends possible to keep the exhaust velocity up.

I hadn't heard of it either until GTP recommended it to me. I was originally going to get a Magnaflow muffler. This one apparently flows pretty good. It's 2.5" straight through the muffler both times. You lose a tiny bit of flow cause of the loop, but not a whole lot. I'd imagine I didn't really gain much anyway out of this. There might be some very small gains because of the 2.25" to 2.5" upgrade from the axel back... and we did eliminate a small portion of that crazy S bend that the stock exhaust does, but that might be made up for with the loop.

I have to go back to the shop today so they can recenter it on the car. The guy wants to cut my stock resonator out and put straight 2.5" pipe in. I'm not sure if I want to do that cause of the possibility of a very loud sounding exhaust after that... haha. We'll see though. I could definitely get some more power if I do that though.

What the uck. Video is still being optimized!
I'm not in a hurry but damn. Its been 9 hours since I clicked on the link.

By the way what brand of muffler did you get. I'm thinking of just changing out the muffler only.

I don't know why the video isn't up yet. Stupid streetfire. I can't post it on putfile either cause for some reason my divx videos don't work on putfile. If they're not working by the time I get home from work, I'll update the videos... maybe even host them on my personal server.

The muffler is some replica of a Mugen muffler. I can set you up with the info on where to get it if you pm me.

I guess if you were going for just sound... and not a real performance gain... it's alright.

You're not going to get much out of doing exhaust on our cars anyway. You can get maybe 5 from the cat-back if you're lucky. Now if you play with the header/downpipe/cat you can free up some more. But I couldn't justify spending $600 on a cat-back that might give me 5HP... when I could do this and get almost the same result for less than half the price. In fact, even if I don't want to go with a straight pipe instead of the resonator, I can have an aftermarket one put in to keep the sound down and give me the flow I want.

Like I said though... not much to gain from a cat-back. The cat is really where the restriction is in our exhaust from everything that I've heard/seen.

you won't gain much or anything from removing the stock resonator...it basically comes down to whether you want it louder or not.

The exhaust sounds good today. I went to the shop last night so he could finish centering it... he ended up practically re-welding new bends in. We wrapped the loop cause it was close to the side in the rear.

It sounds really good. I let FastSS06 drive it away from me while I stood in a parking lot so I could hear it from behind. It sounded nice to me. Kind of a deep tone, which is what I was going for. I will post pictures of it installed tonight after I'm home from work.

All in all:

For a total investment of less than $300, I have a nice sounding 2.5" cat-back.

Haha... I've been meaning to do that. If I can actually get home before 2:30AM and stay tehre for longer than 15 minutes, I'll get some pics up.

I'll still go when you get it done if you want. Just give me a ring when you're going.

I went by MY SPOT (Pepboys) around 7:30 and no one was there yet. I am putting on my rear sway bar tonight. May be calling Dennis to see if he can weld up the exhaust. Just would like to see your pics or car. Where did you get the elbows so fast?

Here are pics as promised:

During the install:
The exhaust isn't welded yet... just tacked. You see discolored portions because of heat. Not to mention... my car is diirrrrrtyyy.

All done:
The tip sticks out about an inch too far... but that's the only way the muffler would fit. It's a tight fit. I might get a different tip welded on and just have this one cut off.
