a few questions...please reply this time

Hey guys.

I posted before and it went over like a lead baloon. So let's try this again.

I have my 2.4 SS. I liek the way the exhaust sounds. However, becasue I have the auto, it can't rev beyond like 3500 at idle. I'd like to remove my rev limiter. Is there something simple I can do to do this, or do I have to send it to an ECU place (forget the name) to have it reprogramed...OR, is there just no way at all? lol. I don't really need anything else, I just feel like I'm driving a Century becasue I can't rev it too high. lol.

Also: I was peeping the newest Super Street. They have an article about the Phase 5 Cobalt drag car in it. I saw a few interesting tid bits. It has like a 350 throttle body and stuff on it. however, I saw that it uses Grand Am calipers and rotors. Would you see an improvement over the Cobalt brakes like this? Like are the Grand Am (GT spec I'm assuming) be larger or something? Obviously my 17's can handle larger calipers. I mean, when I was heavily in the Honda scene, I was looking into putting Integra GSR brakes onto me and my friends CRX. And I've seen guys use Trans Am brakes on like Monte Carlos. So can this be done, and if so, will it yield any positives?

I'm sure I have more, but that's good enough for now.

An automatic is supposed to be limited while there is no load on the engine (neutral). You should have full range while you are in gear and moving.

If you are going to upgrade your brakes, you should consider both new calipers and rotors for best performance IMO.

What the heck do you need to rev past 3500 for anyway? If it's showing off... tisk tisk And I hope to god you aren't doing neutral drops...
The ignition controller is in charge of how far you can rev, not the ECU.

I don't do neutral drops in an auto.

For my Honda, the ECU controlled EVERYTHING. So I figured a Chevy would be remotely similar.

And yes, I am trying to show off. lol.

but yes, I do have full range while moving. That is correct. That thing redlines if at WOT. It's cool. I can't get my moms V6 Mustang to redline if my life depended on it. Good thing it doesn't.

But yes, I was planning on doing a full conversion. Rotors and calipers. But can that be done, and if it can, would I see a noticble increase in stopping? Is it a direct swap or do I have to do all sorts of custom stuff?

Most brake upgrade kits are directly bolt on, but you should have some experience with assembly and disassembly.

You should notice a significant improvement in stopping power.

I hate to say this, but you kind of asked for it man.
Theres absolutely no reason to have the ability to rev above 3500 in a 4 cylinder, because no one wants to hear it rev past idle in the first place, much less above 3500. If you had a car that sounded good when revved, that would be a different story.

It does sound good. Sorry to burst your bubble. I have a 2004 Monte SS too with the 3.8. I put a Dynomax exhaust on it. It sounds amazing. But it's also limited. So you can't get the exhaust to really show off unless you're moving.

I don't understand what the problem is with this post. If you don't have a nanswer, don't post. Honestly. Don't take up unneeded room on the forum.

Back to the brakes. So all I do is go to the shop and say... "I need front and rear calipers, pads, and rotors for a 2004 Grand Am GT?" lol. Will that void my warranty in any way becasue I'm not using actual Cobalt parts? I'm new to this whole warranty thing.

No, its a 4 cylinder, it doesnt sound good. The only 4 cylinder ive ever heard sound good is a WRX or STi due to its boxer engine. That and a 99 Eclipse GSX with an unequal length header and apex'i exhaust.
The problem with this post was when you said "However, becasue I have the auto, it can't rev beyond like 3500 at idle." You dont need it to rev any higher in neutral, and nobody wants to hear you do so. 4 cylinder cars dont sound good when theyre under load, much less free revved like you want to do.
Hell my 3.8 only sounds good when I floor it in neutral and let it bounce off the rev limiter because you can hear the S/C go bonkers lol. Other than it sounds disgusting and raspy, as do basically all other 3.8's with exhaust from the Grand National all the way to the GTP. I guess you just have a different taste in what sounds good from the majority of other people.

Yeah...why are you on a Cobalt forum anyway? And what's wrong with the GTP exhaust? I happen to like the extra raspyish sound as compared to a Regal GS or Monte s/c.

Im here because the internet is a free medium of expression and opinion, and I have opinions to express.
I cant believe you like the raspiness. Even GTP guys hate it. A Monte SS should sound the same as a GTP because they share the same exhaust, but the Regal GS should be a bit quieter and a bit more mellow since it has the single exhaust. But ick, I cant believe someone actually likes the sound!!

I do. I always have liked that Pontiac specific tone. And don't think you're special that only you have that sound. All Pontiac 3.8's do. Bonneville, Grand Prix GT, Grand Prix GTP, and even some of the smaller engines sorta do. My cousins 86 Fiero GT had it too. That was a 2.8. My Monte had a slight hint of it, but it was more of a rumble instead of a Pontiac whurrrr. lol. Put a Dynomax on it and you'll ****.

The 3.8 is a GM engine, not an engine specific to pontiac. Its the same motor used through out the GM line. And Im not the only one to have the sound I do. Basically every other 3.8 with a dual outlet exhaust sounds like my car, all the way from an 87 Grand National to a 2005 GTP. My car rumbles at idle and sounds like my 305 Camaro sounds at idle. But any gas and you know its a 6. Its not pontiac specific.

You guys gotta be kiddin me! No one has answered AWB's question.

From what I know the Grand Am stuff is not simply a swap.
Phase 5 sports parts off shelf to show capabilities using GM components.
It also sports a 4T65E and this (brake swap) might have been reasonable
with the work already being done (trans swap)

Just a guess

You honestly think I didn't know that? Dude, I said I HAVE a 2004 Monte SS. Incase you weren't aware, it has the 3.8. I you want to get technical, the L36 3800. What I was referring to was the specific SOUND that the Pontiacs seem to make. If you put a Monte SS 3.8 and a Grand Prix GT 3.8 next to eachother, the GP will sound different. It's just Pontiacs thing. I don't understand what's so difficult about this.

As for the raspyness. I wouldn't consider a 3.8 Monte Carlo SS with a nice tuned exhaust rice at all. Sorry...neither of my cars are painted lime green, nor do they have stickers all over them. I was one of the few kinds who never caught onto that bullshit rice scene. Luckily people seem to be going to cleaner cars now. JDM, EDM, yeah...we were into that ever before it came mainstream.

As for the brakes...THANK YOU! Finally a person who isn't making fun of me. lol. So the brakes are more or less not going to yeild enough of an improvement to worry about? Screw it then. lol.
