A few small upgrades...

I might be looking into putting a few small upgrades on my car. Its not definite yet, but I would like some opinions. I want to do struts and springs on my car. TTR may be my vendor of choice for those if they have what I decide upon. I am however, definitely getting teh rear sway bar from TTR if I can get these upgrades. I was thinking Koni Struts, and probably eibach sportlines. I only want my car to drop an 1" - 1.5"
So would the Sportlines and Koni's do that? I considered coil overs, but my boss keeps saying they are junk. The Koni's are just as good. I'm planning between $1000 - $1500 to spend.

Opinions please?

if you have 1500, and are looking into suspension, i have one option for you COILOVERS [/thread]

if your boss says coilovers are junk, he's a complete tool. don't listen to him anymore.

Well, I'm either gonna get real lucky and have it sooner, or I'm gonna wait until my tax return comes. So around that amount hopefully. I don't know why he doesn't like coilover's, he owned a WRX that he put struts into. I don't think he had coilovers EVER. I'm gonna go to the coilover thread and read up on them though. Would I still need to get seperate springs with coilover's? like sportlines?

i am going to have to agree with him. 1500 bucks is a lot of money for just springs and konis. Youll get a much better ride and drop with coilovers

no, the coilovers completely replace everything. IMO, the K-sports are the best up front, but the others like B&G have adjustable rear dampening. the K-sports don't, that's why i'm buying koni rear shocks.

I was reading thru the coilover sticky, but I didn't notice anywhere how these things get adjusted. I will probably go with the G&G Coilovers. So they would replace everything, ie: The strut (tower) spring...etc... How would they adjust though? Do you have to turn a knob or is there another way?

Sorry about my questions, I read thru 4 pages but didn't see any answers directly related to these.

they're threaded, and they screw, like a giant nut, with a special wrench. i guess that's how to explain it. you'll see when you get them.

G&G? i dunno. i gave my reccomendation. if you're not sure how to use these, have a shop install them. they'll know how to adjust them correctly.

they would replace the entire front strut/spring assembly, and the rear shock and spring.

the K-sports are the ones listed on the front page and "cobalt addiction" but cobalt addiction doesn't make them.

Sorry, I meant B&G... I will fix that.

I'm not familiar with them but I may have a friend or two around here that is. I don't mind installing them, I gotta learn somehow. I'll just make sure I don't screw anything up. I have read a lot on these forums, people may get flamed a lot, but there is still a lot fo usefull info around.

I think my bosses problem with coilovers is the price you pay verse just getting new struts and springs.

I will probably go with the B&G's. $1300 isn't to bad for a full coilover kit, I can deal with that. And i like the way these ones look.

Sorry just noticed your post. I was gonna get the rear sway bar, and probably some solid mounts too, if I have any extra money after suspension stuff. Maybe the torque dampener.

i also reccomend the rear sway and solid mounts from TTR, just gonna cost you some more.

Ok cool, Thank you Ls1. I'm 21 and new to most of this, but I'm thinking about getting the turbo balt next year and my suspension can't wait that long. But if I do get it my brother wants me car, so i figured a good solid setup won't go wasted if my brother buys it when I get my turbo balt.

no problem man, you're welcome. i just turned 21 on tuesday, haha. just do your research. look at all the spec's even if you don't know exactly what the numbers mean, get familiar with them, and compare each setup. you can find out what the numbers mean usually by a google search, and comparing them gets really easy.

I posted a happy b-day in your b-day topic in the lounge too.

I planned to do some more reading, I got plenty of time before I actually do grab the kit. I need new tires first.

Well the plan right now is to get the coilover suspension and the sway bar, and solid mounts soon and to install them over the winter while th car is parked in the garage. Then my tax return in the spring is going into a SC kit for my car. I will do the install for that as well, in my garage. i will however need a tune. So who in New York is good at tuning?

After I finish the install i will have to rent a trailer and tow the car with my soon to be Jeep Wrangler, to your location. PA guys are close enough too.

I'm gonna try to pick up most of my parts over the winter. When I get my return I'll pick up the last of what I want and need, and pay for the tune.

Jimmy and Beck and all the other 2.4 SC's jsut make it seem like so much fun to super charge these.

I'll agree with you and him here, Konis and springs should run you under a $1000

I disagree with this. There are way too many things to take into account to say something like this. Cheif among them being that your average 1000-1200 coilover setup doesnt have adjustable damping, so right off the bat you know youre not gonna get a better ride, because there is no way to tune it to your liking/conditions.

Drop is debatable too. The OP is only looking for a 1-1.5" drop, this is easily acheived with springs.

My personal opinion I'd rather have a nice Koni adjustable strut/shock/spring setup, than a comparably priced non adjustable coilover setup.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Something to keep in mind is that coilovers are like anything esles that offers multiple adjustments, its just as easy to mess up your cars handling with improperly adjusted suspension as it is to dial it with proper adjustments.

And coilovers give you the freedom to adjust cornerweights, this can seriously negatively affect handling if adjusted wrong.

everyone has their opinions, but a shop can set them up, and if they're set right, the ride will be far superior to any aftermarket springs.

the two setups i would recommend are the K-Sports, and the B&G's. both have incredible amount of adjustment. the megans, and ARK coilovers are also extremely well made.

If I go coilovers its gonne be the B&G's $1300 dollar setup (maybe higher now after the sale)...

If i go Struts and springs its gonne be the Koni's and Probably Sport lines since they semm to drop it around that range I'm looking for. Depends on how much money Iactually want to spend at that time I guess.

I'm also looking for solid mounts and a rear sway bar. I'm gonna do it all at once while the car is parked this winter.

Then in the spring when I recieve my returns, its SC time for this 2.4. I want the STG 2 as well.

I can let you knwo how mine goes when I'm done if you wish. I recommend research if you aren't familiar with how it all works. I learned a bit so far from the suspension forums. Stickies FTW

The other thing to note is that coilovers will put you out of alignment at any level other than the height you get aligned at...

You missed the key point of my post, how can you set up non adjustable damping coilovers to have a nice ride, they either do or they dont. Ive yet to see a decent adjustable coilover in the same price range as Konis/Springs.
