Getting started

So I have a stock 2.4L Cobalt with a gm installed intake on it now. I want to turbo charge this thing and get at least 300 HP at the wheels. I'm new to a lot fo this and I would like to ask you guys for your help please. What mods should I do/use to the engine inside and out to occomplish this and be safe?

I was considering the Hahn Turbo-kit. So If someone could inform me of what I shall do I would appreciate it.

Good luck with you plans and welcome to the site.

hopefully you have the Automatic tranny, otherwise you're looking at a complete tranny swap to get up to 300 HP

not really true. talk to hahn.. you can run the f23 over 300 whp easily they have a 400 whp sunfire that makes trips down the strip and has no issues..

i wouldn't trust gms tranny ratings further then i can throw em... there are alot of people pushing well over what the 2.0 is supposed to be able to handle .. as well as 2.2's and 2.4s running well over what they're supposed to be able to handle with no issues

Well I ahve the 5 speed manual... I hate automatic tranny's but I have plans to get a new manual tranny anyway. Is there a topic that tells why or whats wrong with a manual that I should look at? I'll be doing some research over the next few weeks so if anyone has any good suggestions feel free to post em up.

What do you mean by drive it correctly? Is there a certain rpm you shouldn't pass or maybe not to accelerate to quickly?

On a serious note too, I would definitely consider buying one of these built tranny's as long as its still manual.

drive it correctly as make sure you're not dropping the clutch all the time.. making the car buck or grinding the gears..

that being said.. i learned on my car.. i have 40K on my car that i put on it and i bought it brand new.. i beat the **** out of it daily but slamming 2-3 when i get on the highway and it's alright for the time being..

people have blown multiple tarnny's but i have no idea how the hell they do it.. considering there are about 5 turbo 2.4s and 3 or 4 supercharged 2.4s and they're putting down 230+whp not to mention a few nitrous ones..

Ok, that's what I was hoping you meant but I had to make sure. For the record, I don't dump the clutch but 2nd gear has been grinding. I am trying to get me dealer to take the car in and fix it (I think its the syncro) but they won't look at it yet cause its not real bad.... so whatever... I'll get them to fix it soon enough. I don't really want nitrous on my car but I sure as heck do want a turbo. I am looking for a ram air hood right now too, I think I found a decent one I liked but I don't know if it directs air to my air box. The hood is a little bit bulkier then the stock hood. If any of you know of a sweet hood, I'll be glad to take a look at it.

Where would you recommend going to look at hoods? I have looked at several sites, but most of them I just don't like at all.

Despite what other members may tell you, the F23 manual tranny found in 2.2l and 2.4l cobalts is only RATED to handle 170 ft lbs of torque. Granted that's GM underrating their equipment, but where you are shooting for you're looking at at least 150% of what that tranny is designed for
Unless you're planning on putting a honda engine in your car, you'll be putting ALOT more torque on that tranny than it can safely handle, unless you do a serious overhaul of it.
Just trying to help you out

Here's a thread with the specs.

getting started, dont buy any more performance mods, other than engine internals, and exhaust. (minus header).

As the turbo kit will literally replace everything anyway.

I checked out this suncoast hood, and when I get my new hood I think this is the way I'll go. I have the sport red Cobalt but I gotta figure out how I want to paint this thing. That solid maroon color is getting on my nerves.. lol

Hey, I don't know if I'll go as far as 300 then, but I definitely want to turbo charge it. If others here have turbo'd their 2.4L's with a manual tranny and nothing has gone wrong, then I have something to look forward too.

spray that 2.4L!!!! i am def. heading down that road not that Hahn has "killed" the intake manifold.

but start with the basics, full exhaust, intake, and see how much more power you really want.
