How hard is it to pull just the motor from the cobalt sports?

Timing chain broke and know i have a hole in my oil pan.. going to do a full rebuild and put some forged internals. do i pull the engine or do i remove the head in the engine bay? new to seriouse motor stuff lol the most i have done so far is S/c and such. LEt me know :)

On the automatics, engine will come right up and out as long as you remove the crank pulley first, theres about an inch of clearance against the frame rail. Taking the head off before hand can make life easier. You will require an assortment of specialty sockets though. Torx, reverse torx are two that i can think of off hand. Torque angle meter is essential for rebuilding.

I posted this pic for the nay sayers last year lol I will warn you though, manual transmissions are a different story because of the clutch.

 At least I know enough to actually provide help when people ask questions, unlike yourself who provides nothing of value. lol

Clutch is attached to the flywheel on the engine, you might not have enough clearance to get past the bellhousing of the trans and the frame on the other side pulling straight up and out, but i havent done a manual trans balt engine pull yet.

I don't see you being able to pull just the motor through the top with a manual. You should be able to pull the engine and trans as one tho. You will have to pull the fuse box, and I don't think you can keep the ac together either.

I have a LE5 bare block with 5000 miles on it. $300 plus shipping

It's not hard to drop everything out the bottom, that's how i've done them in the past. Set the engine and trans as a unit down on a cart, lift the car high, slide it out the passenger side wheel well. Easy enough without a lift.

Pulling out an engine is not too difficult as long as you have all of the right tools and equipment

The only way I have done it.

I did mine (auto) through the top and it went well.

We just dropped my buddies LSJ through the bottom (engine, trans and cradle)

drop whole cradle with engine and trans
raise car up, slide drivetrain out thru front

I don't think there's a how to with pictures and stuff. There are a bunch of people who list the steps by memory, but it's pretty involved for a how-to thread. What I did was find the ecotec build book and use that as a guideline. There are unique details for each engine but the principle is the same. Everything that I unbolted or moved I noted on an ordered list. There were about 80 things on the list. It sounds daunting but it's not that bad. Take lots of pictures. Lots. They are very useful for seeing how cables and hoses are configured.

The car was assembled by lowering the body onto the cradle, so that is the simplest way to remove the engine.

But first thing I'd do if i were you is drop the oil pan to see what's really going on.

sheape 01-06-2015 11:17 PM

How?

How what? Drop the cradle? The build book is the best explanation of the process
