Well guys when you think about it. The stock air box on the ss/sc's could do the same thing. They are in the same location as a CAI and they are not water tight by any means. So it could happen even if you don't have a CAI.

P.S. Sorry to hear about that bro. Bad luck!

^^Yeah but the stock airbox is really only open through the snorkel,, sure the bottom isn't airtight,, but it would keep enough water out to prevent this from a happening.

Airbox mod, howver could certainly do this. Which makes me worried about my XTC CAI,, which is basically the airbox mod with new tubing to the throttle body. Actually airbox mod would be worse for this, as the airbox would act like a straw surrounding the filter, and the snorkel would allow for a lot of pressure to aid in pulling the water level high enough.

I wonder how effective the hydro-shileds would be against this type of submersion.

when i had my eclipse i had a cold air intake with a small modifiation to allow for alot more airflow one day when it was raining REALLY REALLY hard the water was bouncing off the ground andmade it into my intake when i was at a STOP. my engine decided to cut out on me because of a hydro lock............

sooooo i had to get out of the car in pouring rain like no tomorrow and push it to a store so i could park her. once that happened i tried to start the car luckily it was turning but not much so i waited till it stopped raining(next day) pulled out the plugs let it dry and tryied to start it again. i ended up flooding the engine so out go the plugs and wait another hour or so and then plugs in and engine starts up really hard. since that day the car never acted right always running lean in the morning and in some cases it would stall itself out when in park. Thats when i decided to get a new car and trade that **** in.

so moral of the story if you have a cold air intake get a bypass valve or learn how to make it into a short ram for those rainy days.

yeah the bypasses are good ideas being dealer performance CAI, i.e. nismo, TRD. Have them installed.

And so any person found at fault for any accident should not get a dime and should have to pay for their own repairs? Then why pay for insurance. That is what insurance is for, not just for when it is compleatly someone elses fault. Come to think of it, do you even know what insurance is or why people pay for it?

ya like they would believe that.....we actually saved a car once, funny story...

he didnt damage anything but shut it down as he ran thru the puddle(or lake

we pulled the plugs after towing it home, got some silicone hose put it down thru the sp holes and drained what we could with a wet dry vac(there was enough h2o in ther) , then shot wd-40 into the hole with the long straw, got it all around and then left the plugs out for 2 days in the sun...

gave it another shot of wd-40 looked inside with a lighted magnifier, saw just some minor droplets, put fresh plugs in and brooom!!!!!

changed the oil after it ran to op temp and the car was fine, he just turned 110k on the motor

Got lucky!

yes but they seen right through it. they said th estock airbox wouldnt allow water to make it all the way into the motor and being i had all of th eother mod's on it they knew what had happened.

It was a spudder. The water was only maybe 7" deep and i didnt even think it was that deep or i wouldnt even have went through that but my right tire acctually diped into an pot hole that was really deep probaly like 6" making the water over a foot deep. so that splashed up under the hood of the car and the filter sucked water up it. As soon as i hit the pot hole I imediantly turned the car off and i climbed out untill it stopped raining so i could check out the damage.

well there is a bright side to this....you arent paying for the new motor, and depending on the milage you had before it happened, you are going up in resale value because you ran through a puddle!

Uhm...yeah! So if i leave the keys in my car and its stolen i should get insurance payout? Not how it works, they will say you were neglegent, and your screwed.

anyway i hope who ever it was that decided to drive into a lake of water, gets some money to fix the car. I was just saying some insurance reps wouldnt give you anything.

Sorry to hear that happen. You did the right thing shutting it off. Unfortunatly the cold water is what most likely cracked the block, not the pressure of the water, but the sudden shock of cumbustion heat and then cold water.

**** that, you didnt know until it was too late that you went into a fricken lake, ofcourse he should get coverage, even with the stock air box it probably woulda been a bad scene, **** if he did that in an ss sc with a stock air box the results would still be the same, he woulda been screwed.
watch out for puddles next time bro, big or small.
ps, i want to make monkey love to those rims of yours!
