Some ?s reguarding the SS

Hey everyone, to make a long story short, I'm getting a personal injury settlement from a car accident within the next few months. My original plans were to get a SS/SC.... but now I have been told a dollar amount.... one that would barely cover a SC model. Im wondering if the SS 2.4 would be quick enough for me. I'm not into street racing or tuning, but like anyone else, I would like to have some speed. I really just want something with some hard low-end pull. Would this car be quick enough for me? I have never owned a car, only small SUVs (2 blazers and a jeep). Also, I know all the 2.0 guys complain about their stock clutches, are the clutches used in the SS/NA as bad? I have owned a 5 speed before, so I know what im doing, and like I said I do not plan on racing. Thanks a lot. I'm hoping I can become a full member of this board by getting a cobalt real soon!

-Mike

EDIT: Here's an interesting question. Will this car still seem fast compared to the other 2 cars I have ever driven in the past (1.8T A4, 96 Mustang GT)? Haha weird question I know.... just trying to get a feel for this car since I havent test driven one

the clutches arent all crap...i have 13k on mine and had one slip...at the track.

alot of it is how people drive them that make them crap.

test drive though, then decide.

35k and counting on my stock clutch and still going strong, including a couple super-fun clutch burning exercises.

I also have an '06 SS 2.4 and I love it as well. If you aren't into the whole tuning and racing scene, then you might just be satisfied with the SS/NA. The only way to really find out though is to go and test drive one.

think i'll prob go right after classes tomorrow

A Cobalt SS/SC is much faster than a 96 GT at least from my experience and for the audi, not to sure. If your not into going real fast and racing, might as well get a SS/NA. Ive heard it will give you that little extra for ya when you want it. Plus insurance wont be as high

Nobodys opinion on a web board is going to be able to answer your question. You need to actually go drive the car decide for yourself.

well, i test drove my car b4 i got it and compared to other cars that i have driven (cadillac concord, some saturn sedan something, and 2 oldsmobiles), it's acceleration is far faster. i was doing a 40 in a 25 and didnt even know it until i looked at the speedo.

I am picking up a new 06 Pursuit GT on Friday and coming from a mustang GT, I will tell you now that the 2.4 will be slower due to the huge torque advantage of the V8. These cars are very nimble though and for the fuel economy that you will get, it is an awesome bang for the buck.

Sorry I don't know if this is even a necessary correction but I forgot to mention mine is also the automatic transmission and it works fine.. but yeah like everyone else is saying you really have to test drive it. I was originally going to get the LTZ but when I test drove the SS Sedan I was like "Forget it [the LTZ] I want that one!"... after I learned how to drive on an Escalade V8 acceleration is good for a small I4 engine compared to the V8.

I just got back from test driving. I went in a Auto SS w/ Leather seats. Real nice. For an auto it def has a nice pep, I didnt even get to go crazy cuz the salesman came with me. I could only imagine how it would feel with a stick... must be a blast. Overall I was impressed with the car, even with its interior quality, something that everyone seems to criticize. Anyway, I told the salesman that I'm not doing anything until after the winter, and he was cool with that and hes going to email me about anything he gets in stock within the next few months. Thanks everyone!

im gonna play the devils advocate here and i might get beat up for it, but i just have to say if you are really looking for some "low end pull" i wouldn't look into fwd cars. ultimate in low end pull is an awd car. nothing launches like all wheel drive and you can get a lightly used wrx for 20k. Just a thought. my advice is to test drive as many different cars as possible because a car is a large investment and you always want to get the one you really want.

Trust me, I def thought about AWD (Audi, Subaru) But I really want to buy American. Not into the imports.

you definately want to buy new then too? cause a camaro, trans am or mustang might fulfill your low end pull needs too. just making suggestions, but it seems the cobalt is right for you.

I have a 07 Cobalt SS 2.4 Auto Coupe and it is fast enough considering the car is very nimble , handles corners , stops very quickly( 4 whl disks brks) , good price and gas mileage , I traded-in a 97 Camaro 3.8 v6 Auto , I do miss the low-end torque of the v6 But the 2.4 does accelerate fast enough as My DAILY Driver ....
As others have said , TEST Drive the Car that You want ( auto/5spd) before You sign on the Dotted Line....
