tire question

My car is sitting on 205/50/17. I am looking at snow tires. Should I get the same size or a different size? Sorry if this seems like a n00b question. I don't deal with tires much.

I'd stick with 205/50/17's if you plan on using the same rim size. Snow tires have deeper treads and mine just barely graze the edge of my bumper at full lock if I am off-camber at all.

16" rims will fit on our car and a 16" steel rim/snow tire setup can be had for really cheap.

I went with 205/60/16's, they are only about 0.3" taller - no clearance issues.
Speedo reads about 2% under, no biggie.
205/55/16 would have been pretty much spot on for diameter but seem to be a tough size to get.

Side bonus - they ride a little softer over expansion joints thanks to the taller sidewalls

Just for your benefit, here's the price breakdown by tire size for my tire (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes....m=05QR7AMAXA):

205/50R17: $91/tire
205/60R16: $68/tire
205/55R16: $93/tire

I have 215/55/16's on the car, got a full set from tirerack (both wheels and tires) for around 550 shipped. It rides significantly smoother with the smaller wheel/bigger rubber combo. Only problem is going back to summer wheels is such a difference in terms of ride quality.

Be wary of "K-mart special" tires, especially if you're looking for any kind of traction. I'd suggest going with at least a high performance all-season tire if you're going to go that route.

I thought you were looking to get a second set of rims and tires for the winter and not just get new tires to replace your worn-out stockers...
