I got my 2.4 cobalt up to about 116 when it shifted to the last gear and would not speed up any more at about 118 rpms were not moving any higher and neither was speed. What's the deal

no im not tuned. only 16 lol, dont have that kinda money. i just was seeing how fast it would go. went through the gears then at like 115 or something like that, right when it hit redline it shifted again and rpms remained in the middle of the gauge(not sure how much that is)

It is an auto

why would my car turn off. I didnt think there was a governor on the cobalts. Other 2.4 are getting like 125mph and higher being stock and i was just wondering why mine isnt.

I was just having some fun but i would really like to know why it stops at 118

Not that you should be going that fast, but i cant say i was any different when i was your age. My '08 Sport hits 122 in fourth and i have taken it to 135mph out on I5 in the Central Valley. I am completly stock and no tune and a manual. There may be some sort of governer on an auto that is not there in the manual. Also the gear ratios are diff from a man to an auto(obviously, 4 vs 5 gears), so when it shifts from 3rd to 4th, that 4th gear may be to low to keep accelerating. Not sure that that is really the issue, but my suburban is very similar in that it will accelerate nicely all the way through 3rd and when it shifts into 4th it just hangs there. 4th gear is usually a freeway gear for good gas mileage.

well if u knew my parents you would know why i like to drive fast. My dad always used to race and sometimes i was with him. We would always go drifting and other stuff, so thats what i grew up around.lol.

at least i wear my seatbelt. I dont drive like that with other people in my car cuz i know i have their life in my hands. I always make my passengers wear their seatbelts also. I know its not a good idea or safe but thats what i grew up around.

But besides that does anyone hav any idea what would be the reason. I do hav aftermarket speakers and a sub but i dont think that would decrease speed by that much.

Unless tuned to eliminate the governer the 2.4's are limited to 130 mph but speedo error might show it as a bit higher.

These things would be (a bit) faster if not for the ridiculously high gearing in fifth......

is it only the auto that is limited to 130 or just all 2.4. So then DaBuzzard, why do u think it would only go to 118 becuz that is a difference of 12 mph.

well first of all you have maybe 175-180whp.. so you aren't going to keep accelerating for ever. second you only have 4 gears. 4th being a cruising gear, not geared for acceleration like 1st and 2nd would be. so your engine trying to push your car through 110mph wind in a gear thats meant for cruising.. you really won't be going much faster

No dumb people post about it on the forums while still within the statute of limitations. Its normally a criminal offence to go that fast and is no longer a traffic violation with a 7 day statute.

like i said...leave the car in "I" till you hit or get close to redline

sounds like when you shift youre right at 4k RPMs...if you leave it in "I" till redline it will make 4th gear higher in the RPMs which is more power

Thanks to the people that care about me going that fast. I know it is unsafe that is why i only do it when im alone because i am responsible for the other people that are in the car with me. There is only one road i can do it on and its quite a ways away.

Thank you nhanson for answering the question
