Adding an intake and stuff like that won't increase your top speed...the speed is regulated by the duty of the injectors and when they cut out...also, aerodynamics also take part in what the top speed is...drag restriction...

well were governed at 130mph or so (5 speeds) no way you did 138 mph. Speedo readings at such high speeds tend to be out on most cars.

The SS/SC has W-rated tires. They are good for 168 MPH. The Cobalt SS 2.4L has H-rated tires that are good for 130 MPH. Any tire that is speed rated to at least 149 MPH is considered "Z-rated".

I think your miss-reading his post. He just said areodynamics play a role--which they do.

Tires won't affect your top speed, nor any mods short of a flash or new chip. The rating on the tires only allows you to go a certain speed safely (the speed rating on the tires gives the approximate speed at which the cetrifugal force on the wheel will begin seperating the tire from the wheel). Mods (bolt on's) and aerodynamics won't increase your top speed, only how long it takes you to get to the top speed and the safety/handling at that speed. My Stage 0 SRT-4 has a top speed of 138 on account the governor won't allow my car to go any higher. After i got a new chip (Stage 1), my governor didn't cut me off until 160, which is redline in fifth gear. Hope this helps.

As much as I hate know-it-alls, I have to disagree about the second half of this. The speed rating refers to the speed at which the tire can pass a fairly brutal endurance test (can't remember the SAE number off the top of my head). The test involves the loaded tire rolling on a drum containing large cleats at high speed. If the tire were to fail, the last thing that would happen is for the tire to separate from the wheel. The centrifugal forces on the tire are not the big problem, it is the constant flexing of the carcass as it rolls and the corresponding heat buildup. This leads to the carcass coming apart, tread delaminting, blah blah. This is why not properly inflating your tires (lower pressure-more flexing-more heat) is dangerous.

When I am reading something from an unknown source, I like to read about things that I already know (tires), so that I can decide to trust what I don't already know (engine mods).

I don't think anyone was arguing this. They can effect at what speed the car is limited to---if at all.

I some guess US 2.4L have the Z rated tires--but mine are H

Actually in fact you are completey wrong. The tire rating is determined at what speed, if kept constant for I believe 5 hours, does your tire begin to burn away.

I think you just got owned...

Next time before you open your mouth, think about how stupid you look when you go around trying to find crap to stir up.

Speed Rating
The speed rating denotes the speed at which a tire is designed to be driven for extended periods of time. The ratings range from 99 miles per hour (mph) to 186 mph. These ratings are listed below. Note: You may not find this information on all tires because it is not required by law.

Letter Rating Speed Rating
Q 99 mph
R 106 mph
S 112 mph
T 118 mph
U 124 mph
H 130 mph
V 149 mph
W 168* mph
Y 186* mph

* For tires with a maximum speed capability over 149 mph, tire manufacturers sometimes use the letters ZR. For those with a maximum speed capability over 186 mph, tire manufacturers always use the letters ZR.
